I use the forbidden technique "pajarito", "paraguayo" or "tereré de obra" wich consists in putting the bombilla in your mouth before you start pouring, then pour and drink at the same time without letting go. The hot water will wash away the cold soak water (sometimes, even if you don't soak, if your gourd is cold or recently washed, the water will come out cold aswell, ideally let your mates dry) and also the little leaves and stong bitternes if you don't like them.
Be careful with this knowledge young ones, let go before you burn your mouth, the water will get PIPING hot almost inmediatly, you'll learn what your termo is capable of. Don't try to be a hero, the pajarito will humble you real quick.
It is also a great tip for finishing the mate when your water it's getting cold and you can't reheat it.

If I ever decide to dive into Yerba Mate I will probably like the first serving too. I like tea and coffee strong, so this will probably be similar. Just worried about the idea of buying everything and potentially not liking it. I'm hoping to find somewhere to try it first.

I always use lukewarm water instead of room temperature as you do. The first sip is great, although I usually drink Chimarrão by myself, so all of it is mine anyway lol
It's great before and during work hours.

As for the filtration, you could use a very popular gadget in Brazil typically called "mate condom" (not a joke), it helps avoiding bits and residual leaves into the straw.
