For 70 years, India has tended to look at Pakistan as its main strategic rival and potential enemy but recent events have given many pause for thought. Rana Mitter, Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China at Oxford University and author of China’s Good War, speaks to William Dalrymple on the issue, separating fact from fiction on #JLFBraveNewWorld.

Rughtly concluded Prof.Mitter...India needs to know China more than before... To do so according to me India should encourage Chinese studies and open up positive interactions with China.... As you have rightly quoted that the best Military Generals are those who are keen to avoid wars.... Having said that looking into Chinese aggresion and expansionist activities, it is natural for India to have scepticism about China... I was eager to hear about how to deal with the (mis) trust factor with China... which seems to grow further wide after the Corona virus episode and the events ruffling up thereafter... We expect to hear more about India's response and diplomacy from Prof Mitter and William next time...All the best....

William Dalrymple quite simply embarrassed himself by his absolute ignorance about what is really going on in Xinjiang when he talked about Uighurs being rounded up and women having their hair shaved at the tail end of this conversation. Please get yourself properly informed, Darlymple! Make sure you make a trip there unless you wish to make a literal fool of yourself again. I shall have to rethink any plans to buy more of your books recognizing the author can be so ignorant.
