‘Betrayal’: Marty Baron, former Washington Post editor, slams paper’s non-endorsement

Jeff Bezos’ decision to block the Washington Post’s presidential endorsement has been met with a lot of strong reactions – including from the paper’s own journalists and its legendary former Executive Editor Marty Baron. “I see this as a betrayal of the core principles of the Post,” he tells Ali Velshi. He calls the circumstances in which this decision was made – just days before a consequential election – as “highly suspect.” And yet, he hopes people to keep their subscriptions to support the Post’s journalists. “People should try to imagine the world without a Washington Post…We would be weaker as a democracy.”

Here's a thought. How about if a newspaper had the "core values" of reporting the news instead of spewing propaganda?

Jeff Bezos censoring the Washington Post to not endorse a presidential candidate is just the beginning. I support canceling subscriptions.

We, the people, now know where these obscenely wealthy people stand. We know who is a coward, and who is not. We can vote accordingly. We can know who deserves our support, and who doesn't, going forward.

How can it state that "Democracy Dies in Darkness" if its unwilling to shed a light on the most important U.S. election ever? If it won't do its job when everyone needs it to, why should we trust anything it does subsequently? Will it inform us on which articles are censored due to business, due to fear, due to politics or do we need to discern that for ourselves?

Who cares what these papers endorse? Get out and vote and have your vote counted! This is a conversation about money and little to do with election results. They endorsed Hillary and we know how it went. Spend the time on discussing the election platforms of parties and not these money squabbles

Pointedly : just another reason we need to demand separation of business interests, insider trading, fair market policies, protection of speech & journalism and most importantly NO DICTATOR IN OFFICE!

The Billionaires are flexing their muscles more than in the past, showing us ordinary citizens who's really in charge of the country.

Newspapers are owned by the oligarchy in the US. Did you really expect that they will vote against their own interests.

Go ahead and cancel WaPo. There are other places the reporting staff can work. Cancel Prime also.

So sorry, Carol, but Bezos capitulating to Trump diminishes all credibility for the Post. I cancelled my subscription because that's the power I have to articulate MY opinion.

'Democracy Dies In The Dark'. But nobody said it would be the Washington Post putting the lights out.

Why stay with the Washington Post if you won’t really have a consistent voice to expose and report the truth?

Makes perfect sense if you understand America has been an oligarchy for a while now. I’m just hoping it doesn’t become an authoritarian oligarchy.

Glad I didn’t have kids.

Marty, to answer your retorical question... 3 years ago Bezos couldn't even imagine that's it'll be expected from him to endorse such an ignorant an incompetent person as Kamala for president. Doesn't he have the right to dislike her? Not endorsing her it's just a preservation of his dignity. I really respect him for that!
Bravo, Bezos!!!

Sorry Carol, Marty. Subscription cancelled. If Carol has a real problem she could resign and get on pretty much anywhere else. I refuse to give my hard earned money to someone who would betray a trust and Bezos did just that.
