The solar system is littered with millions of asteroids – the debris left behind from the formation of the planets and their moons.

These three enormous asteroids will pass by Earth this week, entering the zone that technically makes them “potentially hazardous” objects.

Looking at NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies list of close approaches, it is almost as if Earth is in the middle of a space highway with objects flying by all the time. As telescopes develop and we are able to store and sift through more data, we’re finding more of the space rocks – especially the smaller ones that have evaded our sights until now.

The first asteroid also known as 2023 UO is approximately 200 feet tall and is racing towards Earth at a speed of 24491kilometers per hour. If an asteroid this size hits the Earth, it could lead to major loss of life and even mass extinction of humans and animal species.

While the size of the asteroid is big and its speed is tremendous, this massive space rock will whizz past us on 15 November at a distance of 2.4 million kilometers.

The object responsible for the Tunguska event on 30 June 1908 over Siberia, is believed to have been up to 196 feet in diameter.

Even smaller NEOs can be dangerous and could do significant damage on earth. On 15 February 2013, a large fireball approximately 20 meters across disintegrated in the skies over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk.

According to NASA, the explosion released the energy equivalent of around 440,000 tons of TNT and generated a shock wave that blew out windows and even damaged buildings. Over 1,600 people were injured in the blast, mostly due to shattered glass.

The second asteroid 2019 UT6 is also part of the Apollo group and was found on 05 October, 2019. Its size is estimated in the range from 360 to 787 feet. This November, the asteroid 2019 UT6 will pass past Earth on 24 November at a distance of 3.4 million kilometers at a speed of 47000 kilo-meter per hour.

The third asteroid to grace the skies in the coming week is known as 2019 CZ2. Measuring 242 feet in diameter, this space rock belongs to the Apollo group. It will come within a close proximity of 1 million kilometres from Earth on 25 November, traveling at a velocity of 21000 kilometers per hour. This close encounter offers astronomers an excellent opportunity to gather valuable data and deepen our understanding of these extraterrestrial entities.

According to current projections by NASA, no space rocks are forecast to collide with Earth in the next 100 years. NASA and other space agencies spend a lot of time tracking the space rocks. Even smaller asteroids of only a few tens of metres would cause massive destruction if they hit a populated area.
