The city of golf carts

Some American cities use buses, or trams, or trains. Peachtree City, Georgia, has a different solution: it's not quite public transit, but a hundred miles of golf cart tracks helps to keep cars off the road.

With thanks to Titan Miller for emailing me the idea, back in 2017!

The Georgia road trip continues! Thanks to Mayor Fleisch and her team for their time. I realise that the golf carts aren't directly comparable to public transit - for a start, they're privately-owned - but I'd say that replacing cars with slower-speed, electric vehicles is at least an improvement!

Oh I bet there’s some crazy cart races after school

I live in peachtree city and there is no secret racing gangs on golf carts, however I will be fulfilling this goal and starting one

The fact that Tom just casually eats his McDonalds in the middle of the interview amuses me to no end. The bit from 3:32 to 3:43 was especially hilarious with that crumb drop.

Prohibited in Peachtree City:
• littering of banana peels
• throwing objects at other cart drivers
• drifting
• blue shells

I went to highschool there. 80% of injuries among boys aged 15-17 were flipped-golfcart related

"The brakes on this are very good, I'm sorry...."
- "It's better than the alternative"
If that's not a typical Tom Scott answer I don't know what is ;)

Step 1: Get a golf cart
Step 2: Remove the limiter
Step 3: Lower it until you become one with the ground
Step 4: Remove top pieces
Step 5: Go(lf)-kart

This place looks amazing if you're into electric skateboards.

One thing that is not mentioned is that this system will save a ton of wear on the traditional roads, making maintenance cheaper. This is a really good solution for individual transportation.

I grew up here.
Yes Tom, at 15 we did remove the limiters from our carts. Golf cart drifting was a local sport. Things did get out of hand, but most of us made it out alive.

I actually live here, and it’s great! Picking up groceries from Walmart in a golf cart is an experience, and it never gets old no matter how many times you do it. And yes: people bike on the paths all the time, it’s encouraged!

Wow this is amazing; I had no idea this existed! But with this kind of path infrastructure, why are they using golf carts and not electric microcars, like the Birò? These are very common here in Amsterdam and they're much nicer to ride than golf carts (but a similar size or even smaller).

"You can't have a quarter of a cart network" I really wish my local council were capable of that kind of logic. They decided to build a cycle path the the next town and successfully completed their plan.
At no point did they ask the other town to build a cycle path to join theirs though.
So it's literally a path that goes nowhere, it heads towards the other town and then stops dead on the boarder.
Well done, money well spent. You must feel proud of you accomplishment every time you *drive* past it.

I just love how the Mayor themselves were so kind to show Tom around during their interview, as well as even grabbing some food on the way!

Ducks really are Tom’s weakness, aren’t they?
