Gus's downfall really was his sadism, he kept hector alive in this moment just to watch him suffer more and visited him in the nursing home just to watch him slowly rot, but this ended up being his downfall as he underestimated the resolve of a man with nothing left to lose. Walter may have exploited it but it was still a weakness of his own making.
