The Remarkable Story of the Orphanage Burst 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard

"The story of this 1959 Burst, like its owner, is entwined with the musical soul of Dublin. And its sound has shaped the city's music scene in ways that are still felt today."

Join Gibson President and CEO Cesar Gueikian as he introduces the remarkable story of the Orphanage Burst, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard purchased in 1969 by Irish guitarist Joe Staunton, the left-handed blues-rock wizard who played in the band Orphanage alongside Thin Lizzy icons Phil Lynott and Brian Downey.

Because the right-handed instrument was played for so many years by a left-handed player, its vivid flametop has a unique wear pattern that tells its own story about the expressive and passionate way that Staunton played the guitar, and why he was a hugely respected figure in a Dublin scene that was the breeding ground for some of the most iconic rock music of the 1970s.

A rare example of a 1959 Burst that hasn't circulated among collectors and stayed with the same player for most of its life, the Orphanage Burst is a very special guitar indeed—watch to find out about its restoration and new home with Gibson in Nashville, Tennessee.

Great story. However, I think the “Staunton Burst” would have been a more fitting tribute.

Thats the most flame I've seen on an original burst. Crazy beautiful!

I am curious as to why Grovers were installed. it seems that Joe played it with the stock yellow Klusons

So, how do we parlay this touching story of humble beginnings into another completely obscene and utterly ridiculous 5 figure custom guitar? All with unsullied reverence and respect to the original artist, of course!

Im a Southpaw but all the guitars were right handed so I learned to play right handed at a very young age, but This guitar has so much History and cant think of a better story especially on a 59 lesPaul

Great story! My dad was good friends with Joe, and grew up with Phil In Killester and Clontarf in Dublin. I still have some records Phil gave him and a few photos from The Black Eagles days. No 59 burst, though😢

Fantastic, I lived in Dublin for about 17 years and met a good bunch of these guys, in fact I used to be a regular customer at Slattery's of Chapel St., there is another Slattery's in Rathmines if you are familiar with Dublin. Beautiful story which brings tears to my eyes. Cesar, you are going to be truly legendary at Gibson, just like Ted McCarthy or even Lester himself.

That might be one of the prettiest tops I’ve seen on a 59’ Les Paul.

Grovers? If the original Klusons had problems why not replace like for like? They're good enough for their entire 50's standard range.
