Aircraft are built to fly through the air, so light weight is primary concern, not the ability to withstand the pressure of water at depth. Still I’d love it if they were to restart the engines and “fly” under water to shore.

In the movie the plane goes down in what looks like extremely shallow water. For the plane to be fully submerged with room to spare, it would have to be assumed that the water was at least 100 feet deep since the Boeing 747 is approximately 63 feet tall. In the movie it looks like maybe 20 to 30 feet of water at most. It's a fantastic classic movie and I really enjoyed it, though the film definitely didn't do a very good job of conveying the sense of depth.
