The Japan goal against Spain can NOT be called controversial. And I say that while I wanted Germany to go through. The ball didn't entirely cross the line, so it was still in and they could score. Fair goal, no debate possible.

2:46 - The rule at the time was if the ball hit the ref then the game continued, iirc. They changed it since, so that's why you usually see the ref give a drop ball.

The Japanese goal was a goal because the ball had just a bit of the part on the line

In the Villa Sheffield United game to clarify Villa stayed up and Bournemouth went down where as if Villa had lost this game and not drawn they would have gone down. Bournemouth would have survived. Sheffield United finished in the top half (9th) and went down the year after.

5:26 It did keep Villa up but Sheffield United finished 9th that season and it was Watford and Bournemouth that went down because of it.

That outrageous goal scored by Japan against Spain was one of the “worst” goals I’ve ever seen.

1:19 : no, France did not win with this goal indeed : France has a valid goal disallowed at the first game and a clear penalty denied a few minutes before. The qualification was deserved.

6:29 that is a goal, because the whole ball did not cross the line

It’s true that Henry controlled the ball with his hand so that the French goal should have been disallowed. It’s not true to suggest Ireland would have qualified otherwise. Even if France had not been able to score another goal, it would have been decided on penalties.

I remember one Osasuna vs Guardiola's Barcelona.
Osasuna leading 1-0 at HT. Then I tweeted a red card, a penalty or an offside goal would happen anytime to help Barcelona.
Few minutes after that, Puñal (Osasuna's captain) was expelled and a penalty was awarded. Another few minutes after, and Barcelona scored 2-1 in blatant offside from Pedro or Alexis, don't remember which one.
A disgrace

00:36 A clear case of "rigged". FIFA wanted France in the finals because having the World Champions would earn more in advertising revenue. Ireland, being less glamorous, suffered.

FIFA resisted calls for the result to be set aside and the match replayed. France and Henry got away with cheating.

It emerged five years later during an RTÉ interview that FIFA had bought the FAI's silence with a €5 million payment which would prevent any legal action against them.

henry is a sports caster for fifa, and the fact that he's never admitted it in the face of obvious replays, nor the fact that his commentator allies have never questioned him on this, just shows you everything you need to know about people who hold any kind of power
