The rat catcher that charmed the children of Hamelin and took them away was apparently a real person, and the story is based on a real event.

I’ve read a version of the pied piper, and instead of the pied piper leading the children away, he lead them into a mountain, where a hidden door closed behind them and locked. And every day, inside the mountain, the parents would hear music and laughter until the end of time.

Doesn't make sense that parents try to scare children with a story where the Adults did something wrong, and lost their children as a consequence of their actions.
Instead, the children have to remind their parents to stay true to their words, to be honest, and to not break a deal once accepted by every party.

As soon as they were all led out of their towns (yes, the Children were collected from many towns) all those children numbered in thousands were sold as slaves. One might ask why there were so many orphans? because their fathers were massacred in previous crusades.
