The Rhodes gold, you don't need to watch the prisoners escape, it has nothing to do with the gold. I know because I got the random event to rescue the woman and then got the prisoners escaping after in a different chapter. It's just about helping the man when he appears from the bushes, help his wife then go back 24 in game hours later to the prisoner shackled to his dead friend.
