His phrasing definitely came across as "you should be thankful for what we've allowed you to have and stop there" I took note of the specific use of the 2nd person, the rights that YOU have gained, not the rights that WE as society have implemented.

When butchery is used in this context, I always think of circumcision. chopping part of someones penis off, without their consent for no medical reason seems strictly worse to me.

I never thought I would say this, but Jordan Peterson was correct with one of his points (perhaps unintentionally). If you tear down too many of a societies 'fences', you absolutely will let monsters out. You'll let out the monsters that built those fences. The monsters that would rather LGBTQ+ live their lives in misery (or better yet, unalive themselves), than give them the freedom to be their true selves. The monsters that would rather let a pregnant person die, than allow the pregnanty yo be terminated. The monsters that would rather persons of color to die from state sanctioned violence, than reform our justice system. The monsters who would rather our children live in fear of dying from gun violence in their schools, than putting some common sense restrictions on their selfish 'rights'. The monsters who would rather tear down our democracy, than give those they hate a seat at the table.

The idea that advocacy for civil rights risks a sudden backlash and, therefore, loss of civil rights is chillingly similar to the narrative that abusers use to manipulate the target of their abuse. After some horrific blowup resulting in a black eye or broken bones, the cry is usually, "Look what you made me do!" Sometimes it's softer as in, "I'm sorry, honey... but I love you so much it makes me crazy sometimes!" But however the message is delivered, the substance is ALWAYS, "That black eye is YOUR fault! Don't let it happen again!" When you say Jordan Peterson sounds like he's making a threat, that's exactly what he's doing. "Don't you dare ask for anything else or we'll take away everything, and it'll be YOUR fault!"

But just as the target of abuse eventually realizes that whatever they did is not what causes the abuse and that there is nothing they can do or not do to avoid it, I like to think that anyone who advocates for civil rights knows that bigots are ALWAYS looking for a way to roll back those rights -- NO MATTER WHAT ADVOCATES DO. LGBTQ people could all agree tomorrow to fade into the woodwork, never do or say anything to draw attention to their sexuality, all be even more quiet than homophobes want them to be, and homophobes would still be working to roll back gender equality any way they can.

So you might as well keep speaking up.
