"My Sentimentality Extends The Length Of A Coin." - 12 Years A Slave #shorts #12yearsaslave #movie

12 Years a Slave is a 2013 biographical drama film directed by Steve McQueen from a screenplay by John Ridley, based on the 1853 slave memoir Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, an African American man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. by two conmen in 1841 and sold into slavery. He was put to work on plantations in the state of Louisiana for 12 years before being released. The first scholarly edition of David Wilson's version of Northup's story was co-edited in 1968 by Sue Eakin and Joseph Logsdon.

Giamatti has been among my favorite actors since The Illusionist

Paul G easily plays the most despicable character in the film. And he does it so well.

Paul Giamatti is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood

There are people who believe that being a slave was great because slaves had "free" food, "free" clothes and "free" shelter. Not 10, 24 or 50 years ago. But in 2024. There are people who actually believe that.

Dear God, this is my history, my grandmother was born into slavery, I make sure to educate my Son of this, so that he respects & honors the sacrifices of those before him, which allows him to go to Yale

If I had a nickel for everytime Paul Giammati played a slave trader, id have two nickels. Which is odd that it happened twice.

Reminder: There are more slaves in the world today than there were in the 1850s.

Paul Giamatti is so gifted that you can love his character in one role and despise him in the next

It’s soul crushing to watch this scene. Let alone imagine what the actors portraying these monsters must have felt.

Years ago when I was a child I saw this scene (or one very simmilar to it) while my father was watching TV.

It (alongside another scene from a different movie) forever ingrained for me the image of what slavery is.

Its also one of these two scenes that replays in my head everytime I see somebody make a claim that it wasn’t that bad.

I never watched the rest of the movie as a child. And i’ve intentionally avoided it since then. Since I fear the knowledge of how the story ends may change that lesson, however unlikely that is.

Eliza’s pleads in the background are freaking heartbreaking because as a slave she literally can’t speak unless spoken to so all she can do is silently beg in the background knowing her children are going to be sold

Movies like this, Schindlers List, Rwanda, etc, they’re one time watches for me. They rip your heart out.
