Columbo's keen eye and patience solved this one, he also fired a gun into a box of sand to see if Heralds wife could have heard the shot to see if she witnessed the murder in the end she became a witness to his arrest

Hey, they stopped it before the end! The scene continued with a shot of Elizabeth's crestfallen face. In all of the Columbo episodes, this is the best "gotcha" moment.

The blonde guy in this episode reminds me of a tall version of David McCallum in The man from UNCLE.

What makes Columbo suspicious of a murderer is when they have too good an alibi for the time of the murder. On top of that the murderer knew the security camera didn't cover the entire room, and that he could shoot the victim from the part of the room that was invisible to the camera. A random murderer wouldn't know that and would have got caught on camera red handed.
