Tony Jeffries answers the question "Are You Too Old To Start Boxing?". Any one can box at any age but this will really depend on your goal in boxing. Boxers who started at early age to compete have advantage but you age will not matter if you are doing this for fitness.

I started when I was 32. Went on to have ABA Masters bouts and then after 35 had white collar bouts. Also qualified as a coach. 47 now and still boxing. Recommend getting into it, but know your own limits.

I started about 4 months ago at the age of 50. Did it for a few reasons mainly fitness (bored with running and crap at football) also wanted to step out of my comfort zone and learn a new skill. One of the best sports i've ever done and wished i'd started years ago. If you wanna give it a go, find a good gym and trainer (mine's a 2x British lightweight champion) and do it now, no matter what your age is.

I boxed when I was 13-16 then quit when I was beginning to learn to be a coach due to an unfortunate situation with my gym. My life went to hell until about a year and a half ago when I was 29. Only just rediscovered it now and I’m just grateful for the opportunity to make another run at the sport and become a good teacher. I might not be a world champion, but I can be a champion in my own right.

In my 60s, still do shadow boxing and a bit of light bagwork a couple of times a week and a bit of cycling. I might not be able to fight my way out of a paper bag nowadays, but it helps keep me active and boosts my confidence.

Was 36 when I got into it to help improve my self defence. To all of you, I'd say make sure you get a good instructor. Initially had one guy training me (fairly young dude) who let each bout turn into a free for all. I was put up sparring against a far more experienced fighter who knocked me about and the young instructor wouldn't stop the fight, so I actually had to stop the bout myself - despite this young instructor actually telling me to keep going. Quit that class that same night and then went and got a sensible instructor with a good reputation and its made the world of difference. Like Tony said, "You have to look after yourself!"

Tony, I started boxing for fitness in 2019 at the age of 55. I loved learning about the sport and it really changed my opinion and the sport and what what it takes for them to compete. I still use it as part of my workouts and don’t think I’ll ever stop. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with this channel.

I am 42 years old turnin 43 and started boxing 3 years ago. Your channel was very helpful to me during my starting phase.
Now I can even keep up in sparring with people half of my age.
As you said, defense is the key. Thank you!

Hey Tony, love your channel, I boxed a bit when a teenager, I’ve started hitting a bag again and I’m 61 now, great training and you just never know when it might get you out of trouble 👍 my dad was a PTI in the navy and won the golden gloves, he was also a qualified referee. You’re an inspiration, my dad would have loved you, keep up the good work 👍 you’re giving boxing a good name and press. Well done 👍👍👍

Hi Tony. I was bullied at school and my Great Grandad (who was a bare knuckle fighter in the docks in London) was so annoyed that he took me to boxing club at age seven. I joined the army at 16 and boxed until I was in my mid 20’s but stopped when I realised I wasn’t that good. I’m 63 now and after having a life changing operation I need to get fit. I found your videos by chance (?) and have now started to use them to do this. It’s honestly given me a new lease of life. I’ll never have another ring fight at my age, but I’m determined (with your help) to achieve my goals. Thanks lad!

I'm 34 years old and I started boxing last year bcuz I was just tired of working out at home but I didn't wanna hit the gym and get swole. And next month, I'm having my first fight in the ring attending a competition. It's never too late to start what you love!

Started boxing in November last year at the age of 37.5 and at first never intended on doing anything more than sparring. I became obsessed with everything about it and am competing in October (was postponed in May) I have set out to aim for a pro debut towards the end of next year but have capped it at 10 pro fights to protect myself. Those goals are what motivate me on the days I don’t want to train

At 47 I'm too old to be getting in the ring, but I'm never too old to start boxing towards a healthy lifestyle. Boxing is great cardio and a great workout. Plus it's a great skill to learn. It might even save my life one day.

I started Muay Thai at age 41
18 months later I had quit drinking and shed 30kg (70 lbs)+
Really changed my outlook, even this long in the tooth.
Strongly recommended for absolutely anyone.

I'm 54 years old and just started boxing. I love it. What an awesome sport. So much better than the gym. It's fun, it's intensive. You learn a valuable skill and confidence. Women think you're now "dangerous". You train with younger guys. Camaraderie is amazing. You cannot slack off or you'll get punched (by younger dudes).

Hello coach!! I have watched your videos and listened to my coaches at the gym. I am the oldest fighter at the gym and I have NEVER been made to feel as if I don’t belong. What I am saying your educational videos also make me feel confident enough to keep getting better.
THANKS SO MUCH. (50 yr old asked for advice on light sparring). PS I have Gotten better. The screw punch has given me so much SUCCESS.

Started at a boxing fitness club when I was 38. I had never done any type of combat sport or martial art. I had never even been in a fight at school. At 40 yrs 7 months I just competed in my first amateur bout. You are never too old if the mind and the body are willing!

I started one month ago, right before I turned 70. I already exercised regularly but my boxing class at the Y has spiraled into better fitness and improved my off-day exercise routine. It's a very good program to begin.

Tony, thanks for all the efforts and everything you give. I have kept boxing ever since I was a kid, Golden Gloves, college, and all thru my adult life. At 54, I can assure you it has made a massive difference in many aspects of my life. Planning to do it until my last day.

I'm 32, I'm not very physically active, and I've been thinking about doing boxing to get in shape. I got a pair of gloves and found these videos. The amount of knowledge packed into each one is great and just what I needed to get started. I want to find a gym and a good instructor but most of the gyms are in the city and the ones near me only offer kickboxing, but I hear they're not the same.
