Russian forces have captured the eastern outskirts of the besieged city of Mariupol, reports the Ukrainian military.

It comes as the Ministry of Defence say the bulk of Russian ground forces are now only 25km from the centre of the country's capital, Kyiv.

Sky's Thomas Moore and Air Marshall Edward Stringer analyse the latest movements on the ground.

As someone coming from Finland I really cannot watch these steril analysis anymore of people being killed merely 1000km from where I am by bullies who did that to us 80 years ago.🤦🏻‍♀️

Putin woke up 2 weeks ago and thought "f*** it, it's time to destroy my reputation and Russia's reputation and any little happiness that my citizens have"

The Russians haven't learnt their mistakes from the first Chechen war. They rolled into Grozny in a long convoy, the Chechens took out the first and last tank then proceeded to knockout each tank as they were blocked in. I'd like to see the Ukrainians try a pincer movement on that long supply chain quite far up if at all possible and negotiate from there.

"Supplying War" was once required reading for US Army officers. Amateurs talk of tactics, professionals talk of logistics.

I wonder what would happen if tens of thousands of armed farmers moved in and encircled the encirclement and made themselves a serious "nuisance"?

Lithuania’s Nauseda said a policy of deterrence was no longer enough and that “forward defence” was now needed. He predicted that “Putin will not stop in Ukraine if he will not be stopped.

Will Russian army meet a Teutoburg Forest moment to the east of Kyiv? Muddy fields, narrow roads, forested areas. Great ambush set up.

If the Russians tried this with Nato its logistic columns would have been dust two weeks ago. This whole horrid debacle has shown us all just how useless Russia's ground forces are. The Chinese will have noticed this. Anybody for a trip to the vast resources of Siberia?

I would just like to congratulate the Russian forces. They have lost 3 major generals one general and 5 colonels fighting bravely. Now normally there are on average 1, 400 regular troops to one general and 100 troops to one colonel. So we would expect the above looses to equate to Russian troop deaths to over 6, 000 soldiers. However Moscow has informed us that only 500 troops have been lost. As we know Moscow never lies we must assume that instead of normally sending cannon fodder to their deaths, that Moscow has put all those generals and colonels in the front line to die instead. Well Done Russia (for those whose first language is not English please read the definition of sarcasm)
