"Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Ben Franklin
Both client and server should always assume the other is hostile. The internet IS hostile.

Great talk. I'm currently working on a free and fully decentralized messenger using GNUnet. It won't rely on any central or federalized servers while using encrypted connections which can also be indirect. So you don't need any account, registration, mail address or name to use it. The goal is to provide as much convenience of other messengers as possible while staying as private as possible. Basically all options to share information which could identify you as a user will be opt-in. It will still take some time until it's usable for the general user but I hope we'll get there having a secure and private default. GNU Jami is also pretty neat in the meantime which let's you configure most options which a still central like the bootstrap server, stun server and used certificates.

Regarding browsers, I switched to Brave a few months ago. It's amazing to see the difference in terms of tracking compared to Chrome.Just install the "Disconnect" extension on both browsers and you will see the difference. Brave has also just launched its search engine: search.brave.com based on privacy. It needs to be improved but it already offers good results. It is clearly moving towards a privacy-based business and that's fine even if it's not perfect yet.

I've got KDE Neon on my desktop as a daily driver, /e/OS on my Galaxy S5 to replace my iPhone SE, Brave as my primary browser with Qwant as my search engine, Signal instead of SMS or Facebook Messenger, and Element instead of Discord. I'm quite happy with this arrangement. I don't miss the old spyware at all.

I'm slowly but surely getting people around me to realize the gravity of what's going on and make the shift, too.

I use Linux, I use Firefox, I make sure to install "uBlock Origin" and "AdBlock Plus" and enable them. They not only notify me of sites that are "attempting" to deposit cookies on my machine, but they also completely block out sites that "insist" that I disable my blockers in order to view their content. (And there are TONS of sites out there like that...Popular Science?...I'm lookin' DEAD at YOU bruh!) Once I hit a site and they "politely demand" that I disable all blockers in order to view their content?...I place them on a blacklist, and don't bother with them anymore. There/s NO reason why I have to EXPOSE MYSELF to a web site JUST to read an article! The same thing goes for my OnePlus 6T phone. It has a version of Android on it, and there are apps that I'll use...(GMail, WhatsApp) but when I try to open or install some app, and the first thing they ask for is ACCESS to my PHOTOS and FILES?...or they state that "In Order To Continue" I need to give this app WHICH IS A BANKING or a PDF VIEWER....ACCESS to my phone's CAMERA!?...so what?...the PDF I want to view...WANTS TO VIEW ME BACK!?...Uh-uh. I refuse to install or use apps like that. I don't browse the web from my phone, and use WhatsApp only when I'm home. when I'm out and about?...unless I'm actually using the phone?..I turn it I leave it in my CAR while at work!! I think a lot of people have been duped into believing that these "demands" by apps are "normal" and don't pose a threat....but stop and think about it...an APPLICATION...that is going to be USED for something like PLAYING A GAME in your downtime...NEEDS ACCESS TO YOUR CAMERA!?....when all you're going to be doing is PRESSING some on-0screen buttons!?...What...the ACTUAL F*CK!?....I may use GMail now?...(due to work) but I'm still waiting patiently for my PINE-PHONE!...LoL!...and my NEXT desktop and laptop?...will be coming from Syatem76!....I guess too many people have been fooled...

what im really worried about, is that people'll use social engineering or backdoors hacking or middle man to steal my data. Already had it happen to me, my veg. files were stolen, and probably read most of my notepad documents :(

So, every site logs you. You can open dev tools Ctrl+Shift+C and go to Console tab and see how many trackers. The question is, how do those places make money without ad revenue? I mean, everyone here got tracked. We all happily left Meta Data so Linux For Everyone can get paid. Well I own a site with one google adsense tracker, as it is a non funded blog.

So you simply can't go do anything on the regular www without being tracked. ISP, like they said, but also a VPN service. Even using an adblocker, lets the blocker see where you have been. They have to connect you. Records are somewhere.

So, you will never stop the Meta Data leak. Try to manipulate. This is more practical for the non Snowden.

I'm Not saying give up and hand over your bank accounts. People try to hack my site 3 to 5 times a day. I made it look like a stack it's not. Manipulating the perception. I rather them not. But I stand a better chance if I muddle the Data.

So go to sites proudly that you want to support. Make sure you really want to be there. Otherwise, change the Data you give up. Like I sport a 3 year old degoogled phone. I use different browsers for different workflows with different emails and two factor when ever possible. Also just lock your credit file if you can. Tools like tor, vpn, even Qubes are not to be used without the knowledge to minimize Meta Data leaks. Think about the proper level of protection for your knowledge base.

People will leave Facebook if they knew how hard it is to get any news.

Is it real when you listen to someone talking about privacy with AirPods in ears?

This video didn't convince me and didn't discuss the real problem.
The real problem is the government accessing your data via a third party like Microsoft or google. We need better restrictions on government power. Corporations only motive is to make profits and unlike the government lacks power to take away my rights.

The virtual credit card is a good idea. People would be far better off making sure their credit score is frozen, using two factor authentication, and having unique passwords for each account.
