Unfortunately, it’s been estimated that as many as 85% of the e-bikes currently sold in the U.S. are not equipped with battery packs safety tested to UL 2271 standards. In this video, we'll share the top 5 safety tips to prevent e-bike battery fires and explain why they happen.

Purchasing an e-bike is a big decision with many considerations to keep in mind, but your safety should never be a compromise. #1 tip, don't steal an ebike and use a random adapter to charge the battery. This is usually how these fires start, thieves trying to charge stolen bikes.

Also, charge the battery only when it needs to be charged (50% or less). She was spot on with everything else. She kept emphasizing not to use an aftermarket battery or charger. I was about to buy an aftermarket controller for my wife’s evercross scooter. So glad better heads prevailed. The controller I looked at had different connections so I didn’t buy it. The one from evercross was a little more expensive but totally worth it. All the wires were the same color. Just plug and play.

Another thing is to unplug the charger when not in use. There are electronics inside the charger brick that controls how much voltage the battery should get and when to stop charging. Those electronics need to reboot from time to time. That’s what kills cell phone batteries. When you use the car charger cigarette lighter, you’re putting 12 volts into your battery and because you’re not using the white charger box, it does not shut off the voltage when it’s full.

My ebikes are in a tin shed with a concrete base and there's a reason for that. Not all aftermarket batteries are bad. I look at genuine reviews and the amount of units sold. Proper machine built are best and are usually rigorously tested before being released for sale.

I have an 48v 15ah battery from Emmo canada thats defective. Under the warranty coverage it should be replaced. You would think. They asked for it back. They tested it and it lost 9 ah and is now 5.7ah. They said they're not sure it's safe. What would you do?

To prevent overcharging all you have to do is charge the battery one time and sit next to it and mark down how long it takes to charge at each percentage point, so at 48 volts you would mark the time then at 49 volts you would mark the time so on and so forth until it's full.
This way no matter what voltage it's at you will know how long it takes to charge from that voltage to full.
Then all you have to do is buy an automatic wall outlet timer and set it accordingly so it will automatically turn off at the wall when the timer gives up so you're scooter doesn't overcharge in the case that the BMS fails or the charger doesn't do its job correctly and overcharges your battery.

Hi Juiced Bikes! Can I charge indoors? Our country often reminds us not to charge electric motorcycles indoors. Is it the same for e-bikes?

Nice video. Some ebike batteries have an on/off switch. When charging the battery when it's off the bike, are you supposed to switch the battery on, off or does it not matter? Also, once the battery is charged, are you supposed to then turn the switch on before putting it back on the ebike? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for battery tips! eBike safety in general is a Major Concern... Motorcycle safety switches made me careless about my kickstands... However, the stand on my ebike left me with a broken neck April 22, 2023...! Are there more safety measures we need to learn? (Liked and Sub'd tho not a Juicer)

"Do not store battery near water heaters" Wait... what??? Is that like on a stove near a kettle?? So in the oven, as a wheel chock, as a yule log... all fine then??

It happens even with reputed ebikes 😂
Some cells simply go full short circuit by themselves(because of lithium dendrites) but this is rare. Just one of the quirks of lithium cells.
