Steamboat Geyser, Yellowstone - Huge Eruption!

While staying in Yellowstone National Park, we wanted to buy a National Park passport book. We were told at our lodge that there was a national park bookstore in the Norris Geyser Basin that sold them.

So after driving there and buying the passport book, we decided to explore a little. One of the first places we came to was Steamboat Geyser, the world's tallest currently-active geyser.

However, it’s very unpredictable and rarely erupts, but we thought we’d hang around for a few minutes anyway. Um, it began to explode out of the blue! It erupted like that for close to an hour. You can hear me telling my wife to be prepared to run at 00:49

Afterwards, when we walked back to our car in the parking lot, our car, along with dozens of others, were coated in a hard mineral film that took quite a lot of effort to clean off (never got 100% of it off - good thing it was a rental car!)

At 2:20 and 2:30 you can see tennis ball size rocks being ejected, the chest-pounding power of seeing this in person is impossible to convey with a video but this is an awesome video, thanks for posting it

Rental car was a superb choice, I still have geyserite silical on my vehicle from 3 years ago. Judging by the direction of the plume, every car in the lot got showered on the day you were there.

I waited a total of more than 50 hours on 6 different days during 2020 and 2021 seasons before I got to witness this amazing display, and yes, at about the 2-3 min point I thought "Holy crap!!! I'm wayyyy too close"

The eruption I saw was 14 min of the "water phase" then over 24 hrs of continuous roaring "steam phase" before it settled down for another 40 days

I don't know the date of your experience but I know it wasn't the same eruption that I saw, the sky, cloud cover, and wind direction were a little different

Totally unpredictable, it can erupt 5 days later or 8 years later

Only the lucky people get to see it erupt from the initial spouts like you and I did

Congratulations and thanks for posting

I was there earlier today in the Norris Geyser Basin. It was amazing to see but unfortunately couldn’t see it erupt. Thanks for the amazing video!

0:47 This is hilarious if you imagine this is the earth taking a massive shit / piss, with them screaming “woooo you can do it!” LMAO

Spoken like a true husband/father "be prepared to run!" And then keeps filming. Love it. Thanks for sharing

It is truly incredible! Makes old faithful look like a tea kettle going off in comparison. No disrespect to old faithful, but facts are facts

Me and my pa went to visit here back in 19, and it was a beauty of a sight.
I remember the air smelling so fresh too with all the water vapour.

Norris geyser basin is my absolute favorite.
We missed this one by 2 days and I was so mad. By far one of the most beautiful amazing basins in Yellowstone.

Was there yesterday, no eruption.
Old faithful for a reason, almost timed to the minute for eruptions.
Yellowstone is a really cool place to explore.
Like to be here when there's a lot of snow, next time.

Considering how hot that water must be, I'm amazed you're allowed to stand so close.

It would be cool to be this close to an erupting geyser, though I can imagine that the smell must be horrible at this range.
