Global National: Dec. 28, 2021| Quebec to allow some COVID-19 infected health workers to stay on job

On this episode of Global National: New developments with the Omicron variant as COVID-19 case numbers are climbing like never before. Today, Quebec set a new record for infections with over 12,000 in just 24 hours. It’s still unclear whether the surge will lead to a spike in hospitalizations, though Quebec says the sheer number of cases is already causing major strain. The province says nearly 7,000 health-care workers were off the job due to COVID-19. And Quebec is now making a major change for infected workers to keep hospitals staffed. Abigail Bimman explains.

In the U.S., the Omicron variant is spreading like wildfire, testing sites are swamped, hospitalizations are up and now the Centres for Disease Control has cut quarantine guidelines in half for positive asymptomatic patients. It comes as airline and health-care worker shortages grow. Jennifer Johnson has the latest.

Today in the U.K. another record for COVID-19 cases with more than 129,000 in a single day. It comes as Scotland and other places in the U.K. tighten restrictions to try and reduce the spread of Omicron, but not in England. Prime Minister Boris Johnson says no rules will change before the new year. Redmond Shannon reports.
