How in the HELL does something like this happen? People SLOW DOWN when you can't see where you're going. PLEASE!

It’s a shame that people don’t take driving safety as seriously as it should be.

I was just on this stretch of highway two weeks ago after dark, and after I got onto I-10 headed toward New Orleans, a guy came past me weaving through dense traffic, often diving through gaps where he only had a few feet on either side of him. It’s unbelievable how some people drive.

I used to make that drive down I55 to LaPlace every morning in that fog and if you aren’t doing 80 mph you will get run over from behind. Used to scare the hell out of me because you couldn’t see a car length ahead of you. Surprised this doesn’t happen more often.

The way people drive now I’m surprised this doesn’t happen all the time

The fog, dust storms, white out blizzards, these are the things that make truck driving so challenging....

I've been an Over-The-Road trucker for more than 30 years now. NEVER drive beyond your visibility. A few years ago, heading South on I-5 around the Lost Hills area in California, I hit very heavy fog, and my 6-second visibility speed was 30 MPH. I had my flashers on. Yet there were MANY cars flying past me at 70+ MPH into a fog so heavy that 4 second visibility was no higher than 45 MPH. Accidents like this are totally preventable with sane driving.

I've learned from a young age how dangerous fog is. The problem here was an area that made it so sudden and thick, there's no right decision. Slow down, probably get hit from behind or rear-end someone. Stop, definitely get rear ended by someone. Change lanes to the side, probably hit another car. Even if you successfully get to the side, probably hit or get hit by someone else who had the same idea.

Nowadays people have no idea how to adjust driving speed to road and weather conditions.

Horrific scene. My mother and I survived similar deadly fog there around 5-6 yrs ago while traveling from Texas back to Georgia. I watched as cars went flying off the bridge just ahead of us and a van that somehow was facing the wrong way in one way traffic. It was like a scene from a movie. Absolutely terrifying. My heart breaks for all involved and lives lost.

The state police and county sheriffs failed to protect the public by not monitoring the fog and shutting down the highway. Period.

😢 so sad, but, people drive way to fast and, do not slow down like they are supposed to in bad weather. You just don't plow into a fog bank... Unbelievable 😢

It's shocking that the reporter is saying the driver of the submerged truck was killed. During one of the interviews with the state trooper I watched last night, they stated the driver was able to get out safely.

Can't see past your hood? Go to the truck stop, rest area or park off the highway. This is the stuff of bad drivers.
I ran the road for decades. Used to see this all the time. It's worse in snow or ice. They all think they can handle it.

I've parked in the rest area on many occasions and walked out to the highway with other drivers and watched them slam into each other.
Happens every year.

It's sad that the pressure some felt to get to work, taking the children to school, etc blurred their judgement. The Most Important Thing is Your Life, Safety, and the Safety of Others! If the job, school, etc doesn't understand then is that a place that your well-being matters? We see life can be gone in seconds...My prayer and condolences for the families and those assigned to help.😔

Close the bridge when foggy. Don't drive in when visibility is bad. This is Horrible..😢😢 Prayers for people involved and their family.

Being a person who drives a lot every day, here in Louisiana, I can say that probably 50 percent of these people were looking at their phones, even in this weather. It’s beyond ridiculous that this should happen
