That’s as basic as it gets, so Mitch should definitely try it

I really must protest! A Fray Bentos steak pie in a tin is a thing of pure beauty. It brings back childhood memories on when my mother couldn’t be arsed and we’d get tinned pies with mash and baked beans with a squirt of HP sauce.

Fray bentos perfected the crispy burnt pastry to soggy under pastry ratio. 😂

hit the nail on the head, it's a camping classic. Super forgiving when done in a camp oven, long shelf life, compact and robust storage

These are a bit of a UK staple for people who want something hot to eat that's easy but doesn't just fall into the pot-noodle bracket of instant food. Shrinkflation has killed them though, they were never exactly generous with the fillings but the modern ones are a chunk of puff pastry with a thin veneer of beef flavouring at the bottom and cutting slices is like playing Russian roulette, but the bullet is the one actual bit of fatty steak in the whole pie.

Total classic in the UK. Got me through my uni years. Cheap as, lives forever in a cupboard, provides a solid foundation to put union beers on, and simple enough to cook while being young and stupid. What's not to like?

Mitch should have a whole pie for charity purposes. Live stream it. :)

I grew up in the eighties and these pies were great back then as a kid.
They were certainly packed with more meat than what you've cooked up there.
My Mum would do mash and peas with it and it would feed me, my mate who'd come over after school and my little sister. Great memories.

I kept a couple of these pies in the cupboard at home. I worked away for months & would arrive home late at night/early morning. Not the best but not the worst, i’ve certainly eaten worse after a few drinks on a night out. Also kept UHT milk in the cupboard so I could have a cup of tea.

Being from the UK I've had these throughout my life and I have nothing bad to say about them, they are great if youve had a long day and just want to put your feet up. Next time cut around it and have it over a base of creamy mashed potatoes with a bit of cheese thrown in ultimate comfort food.

Absolutely pack this to go up the mountains back home in Scotland!

Here, I'd pack it to do in cast iron oven middle of nowhere.

And an easy go-to if tired after a long day and no one else is home... mash and peas and Bisto gravy!

Oh Jesus. Reminds me of moving to the UK in ‘98 and going to the Safeway in Wood Green, London. 2l of Old English cider and a Fray Bentos pie…

My first boss and his wife were obsessed with these. I think being older and running a business (and from England) maybe this appealed?

They kept all the tins and used them around the house as well, which always cracked me up!
