TikTok has been proven to radicalize individuals and get them to do things that they would not normally deem to be socially acceptable.

This is a essentially a Cyberweapon that weapon that can be deployed against America to create insider threats. These insiders could then be used to perform physical attacks on infrastructure, all without knowing that they are being manipulated.

When I was in highschool we had a required class called "Problems Of Democracy". One of the requirements was to identify media bias in print and 24 hours news (this was 1995/1996). I still used what I learned then. I wonder why the class stopped.

Heh. Speaking of foreign owned radio stations. Just today I had a conversation with a friend about how my parents listened to Radio Free Europe in a communist country in the 80s. The government did all they could to jam it, but it was audible most nights.

The most critical thing to remember when considering this is that it's NOT theoretical, these same methods have been part of the originally Russia-driven (now a more diverse group of foreign and internal American adversaries) social media disinformation firehose and radicalization pipelines that have brought leadership, targeting as well as provocateurs to create events like Charlottesville, or to exploit and drive extremism within antivax, BLM, MAGA, Antifa etc. I'm hoping whatever reasonable people are left can see that this isn't just a right or left wing thing, and recognize we're watching this moment happening again now to progressives, converting many into tankies over Gaza and Hamas before our eyes.

To be completely fair - you can run the same ads on YouTube shorts, IG reels, or whatever the next short format platform there is.

TikTok is concerning due to 1: reach among the youth, and 2: being beholden by law to a hostile government. Every Chinese company is legally required to engineer a backdoor to their servers to aid in Chinese law enforcement operations, which includes targeted actions against dissidents.

Other than those massive problems, every ad monetized social media (especially short format) will be plagued by bots and agitation. The best shot we have is getting people up to speed about how they're being played and astroturfed by government troll farms operating out of hostile regimes.

Focusing on TicTok is misdirection of the core topic, all mass media ownership and control should be under scrutiny. Misleading and false information needs to be dealt with regardless of the platform.

I'm the parent of a pre-teen and finding ways to keep her from being exposed to the both toxic and criminal elements of social media is a major concern for us. Thanks for the deep dive into TT Ryan you definitely reinforced my suspicions about the platform.

You should legitimately do a protest where you use cyberweapons and then when people show up, tell them that you used tools of foreign governments to get them to do their bidding. That would be a real statement for the government.
