I worked for a GIS company for 12 years. Working in a cubicle all day was not for me. The money was great but coming home with a headache every day was getting old. At the age of 40 I made a carrier change. Decided to go into Surveying. Started as a Rodman and worked my way up to Crew Cheif within 6 years, I worked in the field for 26 years. Now I'm retired but still miss my Surveying days.

Good video, I did a lot of seismic surveying out west setting out source points, and receiver points, Absolutely loved it. I got to do one heli-portable job in Parachute, Colorado in some of the gnarliest mountains in North America I believe. It was some of the scariest days of my life, but also some of the best days I’ve ever had something about pushing yourself to do things that’s out of your comfort zone is so rewarding.
Also worked in Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and also in the north east part of the country
When I finally moved back home, I got a job doing conventional surveying and started to really understand, surveying a lot more.

It amazing to me that a person actually maps. Every inch of this country

In my late 20's i was a rodman, lathe scriber, BLM cap finder, rebar pounder and driver. I walked all over Arizona in 100 degree heat, rain showers, snowfall, fog and wind. Ive seen amazing sunsets, beautiful landscapes and some of the most unforgettable moments of pure awe of just adoring the outdoors. It was a job that is hard to explain, cause it wasnt about posting corners, grading roads, or setting layouts for construction...it was something im glad to have done in my life. Dont miss pounding a starbit deep enough into that 1 ton rock so i could set that 14 inch rebar.

Great video. It's good to see you out in the bush. We still have 2 feet of snow in my part of BC Canada.

Thanks for showing me the rock. I'll be keeping an eye out now that I know what they look like.

I'm a first generation surveyor, teaching my boys this incredibly satisfying and amazing industry is the best thing I could ever give them. My father taught us boys how to build swimming pools, I hated it. Sorry Dad RIP I love you. But I fucking love surveying!!!

How do you handle the heat when its over 100 degrees and you have to wear that gear? Im looking at applying for survey jobs in tx and not sure about it. Ive done my fair share of outdoor work but was able to wear minimal light clothing.

Some awesome land out there man. Just switched from commercial construction to surveying down here in FL and I dig it big time. Rodman ain't so bad compared to concrete and stud work!
