That's a LOT of steps to remember, and it strikes me that it'd be easy to mess this up. Would love to see Apple provide a way to automate this process more, where a person would just have to choose something like, "Move library to another drive" and it'd take care of the rest.

Unfortunately, the instructions are not complete and thus may confuse new users. The part about modifying the library location should be followed by clicking the Consolidate button, in order to actually move any media that is outside into the library, so that it then goes with it when the library is transferred to the external drive. Experienced users know all about relinking and moving media, but newcomers may not.

Holy Cow Batman this is ridiculous! A few years ago (like over 10) I taught FCP at a community college, one of the killers for most students was this, losing files for their projects! One of the things I would stress over and over is make sure you are working with the files in the folder you started on, otherwise, if you open that project without that hard drive, you can not work on that project. So once again this is very simple thing that they have made confusing and complex. I've been using FCP since the beginning of time and just his week, my old iMac 27 (2012) died! I just purchased the latest greatest FCP and it is a mess to try and learn and figure out how things are stored. Great tutorial, but once again Apple has lost its mind. It shows that a software person made this program, not a video editor. It's going to take a lot of time to relearn this application.

Hi I have 2 questions...

1) What do I do with the folder that says "Final Cut Backups" ? do I need to transfer them too? do I even need them as I've never touched or used that folder?

2) It said I was missing tons of Transcodes so I clicked "Transcode" and its taking hours, do I have to wait until it has finished Transcoding before I delete the original Final Cut library on the Macs own drive because its saying I need to force quit apps as I'm running out of application memory?
