What Are Windows 'N' Editions?

The only difference between N and KN was that in KN there were two web shortcuts on the desktop, those are pointing to a website where you could download third party media player and messaging apps.

Oh, and Windows 7 had an E version (also in the EU). It didn't have Internet Explorer, so you couldn't download another browser easily.

Most of the "features" that get disabeld when you install an N version are things that usually take me a half day to clear off my pc after a "clean" install of windows anyway

I purchased some used Dell Optiplexes from a friend a few years ago, and he had installed Windows Pro N on them; I can't remember if it was 7 or 10. You could not activate them with the included Windows key. Once I installed the normal Windows Pro, it accepted the keys like a charm. He claimed he always used the N version, but he really was a Mac person.

Back when I built my first PC I picked up the N addition as a cost savings through a 3rd party seller.
I wouldn't do it again the minor savings resulted in a huge headache.
Some games just downright refuse to play without the media player features.
While I never knew about the check box you mentioned here I always had a hard time getting the files via Ms and ended up download a couple dozen similar files before getting the right media pack.

All the hassle made it to where I never chose the N again in future builds.

I remember seeing a boxed copy for sale of Windows Vista N Business at my local PC World (Now Currys) back in 2007. It's probably a collectors item now.

Also it doesn't ship with DirectX related audio libraries, which means some games don't work. My friend installed it because he wanted to test it, some games simply couldn't find some DLLs, after he installed the regular edition, it worked just fine

I use Windows N for my Virtual Machine setup, when I have to use programs that I can't run on my Linux PC. Other than that, N makes sense for office work, where you usually don't need multimedia or game support.

I remember once searching for Windows Media Player to play something just to find that it was missing, searched everywhere but couldn't find a way to reinstall it.
Some time later, when I was reinstalling Windows on another PC, got curious about the N version, searched it up and discovered why WMP was missing all that time.

I believe execution policy can be set to AllSigned so that you can run your scripts but any downloaded ones won't. Just like on any server the policy is RemoteSigned and nobody blocks scripts for security reasons - security is handled otherwise and allowing signed scripts is enough.

The KN version of XP was also missing Windows Messenger (the trimmed down version of MSN Messenger).
