Man attempts to set building on fire after breaking into school district in Oxnard

9-19-20 • Oxnard • 4:25am • the Oxnard Fire Department and Ventura County Fire Department were dispatched to a reported structure fire in the area of Wooley Road near Oxnard Boulevard. The two story building involved was reported to be an out building of the Oxnard School District.

Arriving firefighters found smoke coming from a small working fire on the first level of the building. The response was upgraded and a hose laying strategy was called for.

Additionally, firefighters reported that Oxnard PD was already on the school district grounds, and had their guns drawn after seeing a male flee from a nearby school district building, according to radio traffic. The same suspect had also been seen fleeing from the building where the fire started, and was reported to be carrying a duffel bag or backpack.

Oxnard Police K9 was dispatched to assist with clearing the building for anyone inside.

By 4:51am, the fire was reported to be knocked down. A search of the building did not reveal any injuries. Oxnard PD was making entry to a nearby school district building with the belief that the suspect was possibly inside.

An investigator from the fire department was dispatched to the scene. By 6:00am, Oxnard PD still had the scene under active investigation.

No suspects have been apprehended, at this time the suspect is currently at large, OPD is currently searching for the suspect
