Context: Proposition 8 was a bill to ban gay marriage in the state of California. It was, obviously, voted to not pass.

Edit: It unfortunately did pass but was thankfully overturned 2 years later. I had assumed it never passed because California is a very blue state, and it obviously couldn’t even stay in effect after the Supreme Court made their decision in 2015 to legalize and eliminate it being a state-by-state decision.
