Astronomers observe 'giant red star' nearing end of life

NASA CSIRO Deep Space Communication Complex's Glen Nagle says the Betelgeuse star appearing 50 per cent brighter may mean we are observing its “death throes” before it goes supernova.

“It’s a star in the constellation of Orion, so a very prominent constellation in our night sky, it’s a red giant star, so it’s coming towards the end of its life,” he told Sky News Australia.

“Astronomers think that we could actually be seeing the death throes of that star before it goes supernova.

“Some astronomers believe that it could go supernova in the next ten years, some astronomers believe it could be in the next million years or so.”
