Hello there! This is the "Sounds American" channel.

This is an advanced exercise to fine tune your pronunciation of the American sound /ŋ/, as in the word "thing."
In our previous videos, we've already covered the pronunciation of the /ŋ/ sound and practiced it in contrasting word pairs, like "thin" and "thing." If you haven't watched these videos yet, make sure you do, because this advanced exercise is going to be more challenging. BTW, you can find relevant links in the description below, as usual.

Okay, the next step towards improving your American pronunciation is to practice the /ŋ/ consonant in tricky combinations with other nasal and stop sounds, like /n/, /d/, or /t/.

There are two key ideas behind this exercise:
first, you'll have to pronounce lots of /ŋ/ sounds.
Second, each word will be harder to make than the previous one.

You'll likely find it difficult, but that's exactly the point. Remember "no pain, no gain."

[Pronunciation exercise]
This is how it works.
You'll see a word on the screen and hear its pronunciation. Like this.
Repeat each word after the speaker. Try to pronounce the word s as best as you can. Pause if you need more time.
Let's begin.

• ban – banning – bang – banging – banged
• fan – fanning – fang – fanging – fanged
• pan – panning – pang – panging – panged
• pin – pinning – ping – pinging – pinged
• sin – sinning – sing – singing – sang
• stun – stunning – sting – stinging – stung
• tan – tanning – tang – tanging – tanged
• tin – tinning – ting – tinging – tinged
• win – winning – wing – winging – winged
• run – running – ring – ringing – rang

You did it! Congratulations!

That was fun, wasn't it?
OK, you deserve a break. Now click "like," get some rest and come back soon.

Hello, the sound /æ/ in the word fan /fæn/ i think not changed when followed by n sound.
but for the word fang /fæŋ/ is the sound /æ/ changed a little bit to /ɛ/ sound as in pet /pɛt/
or to /eɪ/ as in cake noun /keɪk/ when followed by /ŋ/ . Thank you.

Thank you for great explanation... I can easily pronounce that sound in any word but It is so hard for me to link the word ending with that sound in the sentence... I mean moving from that sound to the next sound in the beginning of next word in the sentence.. I wish you understood my mean!

I want to be sure about the words like ringing
is the first ng consonant pronouncing as n consonant?
please I am very confused from several days about that subject
and if not how can we pronounce the two ng consonant very smooth
because if we pronounce the two ng consonant the g consonant appears involuntarily.
thanks alot
