Missouri becomes the first state to ban the use of the word "meat" unless it came from a slaughtered animal. Law makers and it's meat industry backers say this will prevent people from getting confused at the market. Oh really? Ryan investigates.

The plant based products aren't even kept in the same section most of the time so I am confused why people can't take the time to read the box. It's ridiculous.

Let's make Missouri illegal. That'll show 'em.

*This is ridiculous. Any ideas on how we can petition to overturn?*

Makes no difference. People who are buying these products are specifically looking for these products. Call it plant-based protein …

Should we make the word meat illegal and make them use carcasse instead?

I live in Missouri, so really I'm not surprised. This is just so idiotic, a huge waste of time and even bigger waste of money. The original meaning of meat was basically just food item, or dinner. We have modernized it so we can dissociate ourselves from our dietary choices.

If people don't realize by now our country is run by the military complex, big phrarma, insurance companies, meat and dairy industry I don't know what else to tell them. These politicians take thousands, sometimes millions to represent their donors, not us regular folks. Great video, Ryan. Hopefully, sometime in the future vegan will be the norm.

This makes no sense, because "Meat" didn't actually mean "the flesh of an animal" until fairly recently. "Meat" meant anything that wasn't drunk; so it distinguished between that which was an item of food and liquid. For example, vegetables used to be called "green meat". It was in the 14th century that it was first attested that the term "flesh used as food" was sometimes used concerning meat, and it was only in the 19th Century that it was popularised to distinguish between dark animal flesh and white animal flesh. So there's no grounds for this! The word doesn't belong to them. Nut meats, soy meat, vegetable meat, even green meat (!) is perfectly accurate.
Etymological rant over haha

This is unbelievable! I'm slowly going plant-based, and my diet is pretty low in protein in general. But I'm going to start supporting these companies more and purchasing their products.

How about, "animal free", "slaughter free", "no harm", ? Keep spreading the message.

Their intended consumers must not be able to read 😂

What a waste of tax payers dollars to waste time on such a law. I guess they should outlaw the dictionary since it defines meat to include "food of any kind" or the "edible parts of fruits or nuts".

Theyre getting scared...this is a good sign guys...means we're making changes...means veganism is definitely a threat to their pockets

So many of these lawmakers are probably out touting "The Free Market" on the campaign trail and elsewhere. Obviously they don't care about "The Free Market" and they aren't concerned with consumers, either. They care who is giving them money.

I hope that this helps people to wake up to the fact that the laws are not designed for our benefit, but almost exclusively for the benefit of the corporations.

If the animal ag industry really wanted to prevent confusion over their products they should just call them what they actually are...dead pig, dead cow, etc.

To be honest I like it when the things get new names that are not associated with animal agricture.

There's a vegan burger store in Jena where the burgers have names like "Mother Nature", "Mellow Yellow", "Magic Pill" or "Bumblebean".

I like those much more than "vegan chicken burger" :o
