In this video, I show you how to install Windows 10 on an M1 Mac using the latest Parallels 16.5 which has full native support for Apple Silicon.

I then run the Geekbench 5 benchmark and compare it to the best Intel chip in a laptop to show the performance that you can expect.

Finally, I play a couple of games that are only available on the x86 version of Windows, which is something that Apple Silicon can't do, so thankfully we have this new method!

I can’t believe I’m really watching a fanless MacBook Air play GTA V in a virtual machine while being emulated from x86 to ARM

Definitely not easier than Bootcamp but still good

Edit: wait, this runs simultaneously??? Holy shit

tip for anyone out there: You don't have to buy a parallels license to use it. You just turn your date and time back before you open parallels and once it is loaded in and windows it working, turn your date and time back to automatic. After a little while you will get a notification from parallels saying that your trial is over but you can just close the "buy parallels" window and keep using it. You have to do this every time but it is worth $80 in my opinion.

A month or so before M1 was unveiled, I had been looking for ARM-based portable computers all over. Couldn't find anything worth using as a daily driver, of course. But here we are, with a MacBook that costs the exact same as an Intel Mac but runs at almost three times the speed. Incredible time to be alive.

Reviewers: "The best ARM PC is a Mac."
Microsoft: "Ah sh**. Here we go again."

I’ve used Parallels in the past and it even worked great on my older MacBook Pro. BUT, anytime Apple updates the OS... You have to buy the next version of Parallels, because it won’t run on the older Mac OS. I got tired of paying for the same program over and over, so I uninstalled Parallels. Keep that in mind, when buying the program.

As a Windows user for almost 2 decades, getting an M1 MacBook Air and randomly testing Windows on it was shockingly smooth - feels native! Even threw a couple of benchmarks on it. The Parallels Team has made great use of the M1's capabilities.

I'm very happy with using MacOS as a daily driver and with how efficiently virtualisation works on this - I can jump to Windows and Linux whenever I want without even needing to reboot, the 16GB RAM turned out to be a good choice!

Edit: After a year, I'll add that Parallels has gotten even better.

I currently have Windows 11, Kali Linux, and Windows 10 all running without issues on my M1 MacBook Air. Might get rid of W10 soon though, as ARM builds have stopped and W11 feels better.

It is in fact what I was expecting from the M1. The Apple silicon has much more potential waiting to be revealed. Nice job Apple!

It would be awesome to see how well AutoCAD runs through Parallels as I hear that single core speed makes a huge difference with AutoCad

And Intel realizing that their processor is defeated by a virtual machine: wait, that's illegal!

As a controls engineer.. this will be awsome if you can get all your ports to function normally through the Windows OS

Hahah that’s insane. These M1 chips continues to blow my mind. I have a 16gb MBP with an M1 chip. I might give this a try.

Phenomenal. I was ready to return my MacBook after the Apple store rep lied to me and said I can get bootcamp and use windows on an M1. I was so mad that it wasn’t working since I spent $2000. Luckily this video saved me from the hassle and I can stick to my Mac which I love and have the benefit of windows.
