There is not a shortage of nurses. There a tons of experienced RNs like myself who refuse to work in ridiculously abusive, unsafe organizations anymore.

Do you really want all the “aspiring RN’s” that didn’t make the cut taking care of your family? Lowering the standards is NOT the way to do it. There still needs to be a level of competence that goes along with nursing school that should not be ignored. We are professional nurses because we succeeded in the rigorous training… NOT because they just lowered the standard and let any willing body pass the entrance requirements

There is also a shortage of nursing instructors because they are so poorly paid. I completed a year long teaching contract years ago. Because of the institutional politics and poor pay I didn't pursue a career in nursing education. I have an MSN with an emphasis in nursing education I have used in various other ways not teaching in a nursing program. I love teaching and I am pretty good, if I do say so myself. But that environment is one of the worst. Improving pay and educational environments while making programs more affordable would definitely increase the number of nurses entering the field. I won't even begin to address the bedside issues.

Not every student seeking to be a nurse is an eligible applicant. Our high standards in the profession don't allow direct admission for just any student.

I just re-entered the nursing world after 9 years of retirement at age 69!!! I was a CNM for 22 years before that, am now in home health/hospice, which I love. I have noticed the younger nurses don’t necessarily have the work ethic necessary to really do the job…. And that work-life balance is tough to achieve.

There's a shortage of truck drivers. Plenty of CDL licenses, very few being used. Cause the job sucks.
Same with nurses. How many nurses just won't work in that environment. Increase pay, mandate safe staffing ratios. Instead, large corporations are lobbying to make it easier to bring in foreign nurses.

What’s the percentage of RNs that quit due to vax requirements, especially when many hospitals reject exemptions?

High standard must be maintained also.

Sadly, because of the shortage, they will take anyone into nursing school and push them thru graduation. My last trip to the ER traumatized me. I recently had an asthma attack and went to urgent care because I refuse to go anywhere near that ER again. And to make matters worse, an elderly man experienced the same level of neglect, disrespect, and lack of concern that I did. He died in the lobby of that hospital with 2 family members there begging for the nurses to do something for him and being told that he wasn't that critical and they were being overly dramatic.

There's no shortage, there's only a shortage of experienced BEDSIDE nurses.

Did you happen to see Nurse Liz's live the other night about the state of Indiana saying that schools can get rid of clinical hours and sub them for sim labs only in order to push more students through? I definitely think this would be an unsafe practice for sure. At the end of the day it comes down to money. Pay nurses more so they won't leave their jobs that they work so hard at, pay instructors more who take on this responsibility so that students can have quality educators. Retention is the first step to reversing the shortage. Pumping out a bunch of new nurses won't help if they all quit from burn out and poor compensation.

We also have shortage of nursing educators and professors. Does CNN know that's why students who wanna study nursing are turned away?

I’ve been a LVN for almost 18 years. I’ve decided to go back and obtain my RN. I work full time so I had to choose 1 of 3 schools in the WHOLE US that offer 100% online with clinical rounds in my geographic location. It’s a challenge to even get to the point to apply to the nursing program. It’s sad that there are no bridge programs out there. I agree you don’t want to lower standards but making it hard for full time LVN’s to want to obtain their RN is sad.

You will see a massive influx of RNs from the Phillipines brought over here to help with the "nursing shortage" which will lead to saturation of the nursing profession and lower wages, because guess what? Nurses from the Phillipines will work for way less money.

Wow you're like if Amanda Seyfried and Lindsay Lohan had a nurse baby. Beautifully researched ❤️

Fellow RHSN graduate here!! Thursday was my 16 year anniversary of graduating from nursing school and it’s been quite a ride! I completely agree that we need more nurse educators ( I would really enjoy teaching!!) but there are some issues that need to be addressed, namely low pay and resources. Hospitals are already stressed and funding for programs is a real problem!!

I don’t think this is a good idea. There are cut off scores for a reason. I completely understand test anxiety or not being a good test taker but, we are talking about peoples lives, think about your loved ones.

They need to work on better incentives for the nurses staying at the bedside and getting more instructors.

I think nursing students should have most or our training in the hospital. Nurses with more than 10 years of experience should be paid more to teach new students. Our NCLEX should be a combination of 30% written and 70% clinical experience. That would solve the teacher shortage, the nurse shortage and give the more experience nurses a raise in pay. It's really not that hard. We would have better educated nurses who can pass the NCLEX exams 100% of the time.

There is an easy way to fix the nursing shortage = maximum 5 patients per nurse (have extreme penalties for hospitals that break these limits), and a maximum of 8 hours per shift, with no penalties for nurses who refuse to work overtime hours. That is all that is require to fix the nursing shortage.

I have been trying for 15 years to be said nurse. Untill these nursing schools realize that everybody cant pass the TEAS or whatever entry exam they choose. We are going to continue to have the same issue. Like anything else betime they realize it, there going to have no choice but to get rid of it. Go off the sink or swim method.
