Steve always reminds me that my time is better spent listening to my target language than procrastinating with language learning videos lol

Some days I don't feel like study however I watch random stuff.

Lots of good advice, here - thanks Steve. I’d add that I wouldn’t recommend too much time learning grammar, unless it’s in the target language. Vocabulary and common sentence patterns are much more important.

I work an erratic schedule on night shift so my study time is kind of the “get it while you can” approach. Some days I study a lot and others, I’m lucky to get five minutes. I do make a point to read at least three times a week and to schedule a speaking lesson at least once a week. When I’m fatigued from nights and don’t feel like studying, I generally will watch a movie. The two most important things are to just spend time with the language and have fun while learning. I’ve picked up so many words passively just by watching a movie or reading an easy book when I didn’t feel like studying extensively

I really enjoyed listening to your advice. It will be very useful thanks. The bit about not studying when you don't feel like it is spot on. I'm taking a few days off and will go back to learning when I'm ready. I'm glad you confirmed what I was thinking 🤔

All good advice. I'm doing much the same thing: shadowing or drilling practice when i'm wasting time on the internet, or doing housework, or some other physical task to keep my hands busy. If it's focused work that requires thought - like thinking up mnemonics for new words, or reading - I'll do that on the balcony where there are no screens. If I just can't be bothered to do anything I'll watch a movie in that language. Thanks.

I use LingQ with my tv on in the background (low volume) pretty much every day. Usually it is Portuguese (the language I'm learning) I'll have Brazilian streamers playing games in the background on very low in the background and I find this doesn't really distract me too much. Really it helps because when I'm tired of reading and Lingqing I'll take a quick sec or min to watch

Regarding the place where you sit and learn I am of a different opinion. I noticed that it is much easier to learn new words or even grammar in different locations, as I associate the environment I was in with that new content. It gives the new word a different context, thus making it stick out of the pool of other words, especially if you are visual type of person.

This is great advice, thank you! I've been scheduling one hour of reading on DuChinese every morning. When it comes to listening, I have a lot of trouble finding content at the right level where it's understandable and still challenging, I used to listen to HSK audio but got bored with it... need to find something. Usually I do chores with fantasy audiobooks in German, I kid myself thinking "I'm still learning stuff!" but they are easy, it just allows me not to lose my German. I also print out stuff to read in Chinese before bed, but more often than not will read sth in English instead, or nothing at all! it's a lot of mental strain. Cl: need to find new content outside of DuChinese stuff and studying characters...

I'm learning Russian and especially in the beginning I could take just a certain amount of Russian in, but still had time to learn and so I started dabbling with Dutch. For a German speaking English it's quite easy to understand, so I started listening to podcasts in Dutch at a time my Russian wasn't good enough for reading or listening. I sticked to Dutch, but it's not a priority. Anyway, if I'm tired and can't focus on Russian, I get back to Dutch. It also shows me that my way of learning works.
