Good intentions, bad results.

_____

All actions have unanticipated side effects, but government acting through regulation or legislation is particularly adept at creating disastrous unintended consequences.

Great Moments in Unintended Consequences takes a look at three instances of epic government facepalm: Osborne Reef, Corn Ethanol Subsidies, and a particular clause in ObamaCare that is already doing more harm than good.

Approximately 3 minutes.

Produced by Austin Bragg.

the real problem isn't that there are cases like this. the real problem is they are almost never reversed once the results are known to be terrible. the policy stays and a new "fix" gets piled on top often with additional bad unintended consequences.

They finally made a sequel to this, literally a decade later

Another issue is that coral won't grow on rubber tires... The "rolling" is not the issue since they were originally tied together, but after a few hurricanes, the connectors broke and the the loose ones started "migrating"...

I'd forgotten about the ethanol fiasco

Ethanol was a complete and utter shit show. I had a hedge trimmer that took a performance nose dive and was really hard to start. Took it into the repair shop multiple times. Eventually they figured out the new gas was the problem. Something with the ethanol dissolving the seals. They wanted to sell me pure gasoline in a quart container for 12 bucks so I could keep running that equipment. I opted to purchase all new lawn equipment designed to handle the new fuel.

I also used to manually calculate vehicle fuel economy whenever I filled my tank. Now, I understand vehicles get worse over time and how you drive also plays a part but I had an 09 Elantra that started out around 36 mpg, dropped to about 32 overnight when they started putting corn in the gas and faded to about 26 over the years.

Just seen episide 3 on my feed and watched them all backwards from there... Apparently I already like this one.

Looks like they're picking up on the speed of these.

Well as the old saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" and the US Government seem to have a LOT of good intentions and are rapidly dragging the country down that road and we are definately picking up speed these past 2 years.

I spent a large portion of my life believing the fallacy that government makes things fair and just. It took years for me to undo this type of thinking and it's so difficult to explain it to your still-liberal friends. I'm a libertarian now and will be voting for Ron Paul. He says that Health Care is a service and that nobody has a right to someone else's services. He's right: it's immoral to force people to purchase a product. Financially alone, Universal Health care is a failure.

It’s almost as if Government never learns.

another minor problem was the ethanol gets worse fuel economy, so people burned more gasoline anway.
Same issue with unleaded gasoline.

Thing is, the ‘intentions’ are just the excuses or lies given to the public. The true motives are profit and money for someone else at the expense of the public.
