how to make a two color color chart for painting

On Friday, I had another live painting class. We worked on color charts and I was surprised again at the great turn-out and all of the beautiful color charts people shared afterward.

In the video, I show examples of different kinds of color charts, share how they are useful to improve your color mixing scales and get to know the colors in your palette, show how to tape off a chart and make a two-color color study. I also share some of my painting book picks for beginners.

This was, or will be fun! To begin, your top one is Veridian 6:1 with white and the bottom is white 6:1 with veridian if I have that correct. A lot of artists who work with oils say “ white kills color” but I find it very useful to make just the right hue you need. I have an old watercolor chart I did I’ll have to share, but I need to get going on my new one. 👍 ( technical note; did you use your laptop again to film? It came off very different though I’m not savvy enough to say how...like an old-timey filter? 🤔 or perhaps it was the snow reflection in your studio— which by the way is my dream place. I’d never leave!).
