Dear Unity,

Please stop making fantastic trailers for games that don't exist, you're hurting us.

Sincerely,
All of us

I used to remember when Unity was something from a browser that no one gave a shit about, now few years, its taking on fucking Unreal for engine dominance. Times have really changed.

There's a couple of REAL informations as well as fact that you can all check either within the assets themselves (which are available in the Unity Store for free) or from searching a bit around.

• Based on the credits given from the project page, this project was completed by a team of 18 people of different expertise in less than a year. (Not just for the animation/3D, but also for the sounds, post-effects, scripts, scenarios, concept, etc.)

• The challenger (guy in leather) "could" be used in an actual video game as is for something like the main character which is always close to the camera. He's made with 9 materials (excluding his sword). Only 3x 4K textures were used for his whole body, excluding his beard and hair that were done on 2x 512x512 textures, but could have been fused into a single 1K textures). He's close to what you see in Gerald in Witcher 2. His polycounts is around 55K (or a bit less than 94K triangles). That's approx. 5K polygons above the polycount of Solid Snake (or Old Snake) from Metal Gear Solid 4 : Guns of the Patriot on the PS3.

• Volund (the Blacksmith), on the other hand... is on big nut to crack as he would need an heavy downgrade and optimization to be used in an actual game as, unlike the challenger, he's made of multiple parts that each have its own skinmesh. Not only that, but he's made of 173.5K polygons (or 338K triangles). That's more than 3x the polycount of the challenger. For example, even his palpebras (eyelid's hair) are made of single lines of polygons per hair. (This is what gave him high contrasted black palpebras, but it's inefficient in games) Many part of his assets (like belts) were made with a lot of details that could have been simulated in the textures instead of the models. (But his design was, in itself, made to have a lot of required parts moving around like the metal rings he got everywhere on his body and clothes.)

There's also the point about how "heavy" the characters are. Just the challenger and Volund... together, their files takes 1.47GB. (597MB for the challenger and 915MB for Volund.) A game made with such character even if they were much more optimized would surely be one of those games that take up at least 50GB if not 75GB (like upcoming games).

I'm still downloading (in Unity asset store) the background used in the video. I'm going to report more info once I get a look at it as well as my conclusion about whatever it's possible or not to achieve what is shown in this video (including how it's actually made) for actual gameplay.

God damn it unity. I've watched this like 50, 000 times already. I'm so into this short film its freaking insane. If you were to make a half hour long like, episode or something, I'd freaking pay to see it. You have absolutely peaked my interest in whatever the hell this is.

How is this not a game? The character is an immortal blacksmith.

Thanks for releasing all of the assets used! I love the atmospheric scattered fog, the realistic human shaders and the environment buildings.

Captivating. I've been coming back to watch it again and again the last couple of days. "Still not as good as X" "Effects not impressive" "But hey, it is free!" What an age we live in. There is talent on display here beyond any tech. The character, the mood, the motion, the world and what is left untold, the images, the colors tangible, yet magical. I've read this was made by 3 guys. Astonishing.
People want this to be a game, I wish it were a feature.

And beyond the closing dark clouds, a deep voice roared a spine chilling voice that froze the blacksmith in an instant in a panic, with the words echoing through the gap of the mountains: WHERE'S THE BLACKSMITH?!

Outstanding concept, direction, animation, texturing, modelling and a wonderful piece to punctuate the release of Unity 5, showing just how much it has grown up!
