There was a list of biggest underachievers. They said something like "how talented was Alex Kovalev? He scored over 400 goals and he's still looked at as an underachiever. "

Kovalev's skills video on YT is still a must-watch. Habs remember also the no helmet goal and his elbow charge on Darcy Tucker which made fans go nuts. Never poke the bear!

He was a frustrating player to root for. But man when he was dialed in there weren't many better. I'll never forget that 7 minute shift with Mike Keenan.

habs legend. i remember when he put out his hockey learning dvd. "you just press on shaft and shoot" as he one handedly shoots the puck with his top hand. i was amazed

As someone from a country with no hockey culture, who became a Habs fan in the mid 2000's Kovalev is my all time favorite player. He often didn't play to his potential, but when he was on the ice you always knew there was a chance he could do something special. The only forward I can recall playing for Montreal during my time who had that aura of if he gets the puck on his stick it might be a goal, no matter the situation or his play up to that point.

One of the people who made me a Habs fan. Great to see old Habs players getting their career covered by Shannon.

He was just amazing to watch. Top 10 most skilled ever. Everything he did was so elegant and effortless. I'll never forget when he lost his glove, dangled, picked it up, and continued to have the puck.

He had some of the best hands of his time but he was a bit of a slacker too. the kind of guy that could mesmerize you with his moves during one game and then become almost invisible for the 2-3 next ones. Still one of the most talented players that played for the Habs past the 2000s.

I would argue his 84 point season with the Habs was his best year. He ran a potent power play and did not have the Pens' stars helping him

Nice choice today, big Kovalev fan always wish the Pens kept him through the rebuild.

Some of the greatest hockey hands ever with Pavel Datsyuk...crazy inconstant in his performance, but glorious to watch. When he was hot, it was a wizard on the ice, when he was cold he was the most frustrating player of all time. The moment I will always remember and I was there live for it: in the playoff vs Boston, got hit and lost his helmet, then take the puck, dangle like a god and scores hair in the wind like le Demon Blond Guy Lafleur...spectacular ! Best center he had, Plekanec who could backup his defensive failure, his Plekanec Kovalev Kostitsyn line was great !!

A pleasure to watch, smooth skater, high IQ knew what to do with the puck, like attack the net, when he had the best chance he'd shoot, accurately. I'm spare with 'under achiever labels and media hyped expectations, this was a great hockey player. He could play with any line, but he may have scored more with a high chemistry line mate, a Draisaitl to go with McDavid. The Russians had a different style of play and he is world class, we were fortunate to watch him play.

Dude also had a private pilots license, used to fly himself around in a small plane.

Remembering watching Kovalev, he was the definition of a player that could get by on his talent and only got by on his talent. He did just enough to get a decent payday but rarely looked totally engaged.
