The Porter's Gate - Wood and Nails (feat. Audrey Assad & Josh Garrels)

In June, musicians, pastors, writers, and scholars from around the country gathered together in NYC to collaborate on a series of worship songs for a new worship record themed around faith and vocation. This song was originally submitted to our songwriting contest by Keith Watts. Additional lyrics and melody by Isaac Wardell and Madison Cunningham.

A couple of years ago when I first heard this song, I was an alcoholic, and I have a family.
It gave me a sense of eternal purpose then, and does now. It was the beginning of the end of that journey, and I've been free for over a year and a half.
To me, this is a song of victory. "The task is finished" "The curse is done, the battle won". Indeed, and more. Amen.

I found this song as a Protestant a few years ago. I didn’t know that Audrey was a Catholic. I’ve recently learned she has fallen away from the faith. I find it hard to believe that even in her doubts that the Holy Spirit has abandoned her. Whatever the purpose for her journey is, I pray it be revealed and she come to a place where she is used as a vessel for healing. The sons of Adam and daughters of Eve desperately need those anointed in the gift of healing. Peace over Audrey.

In all honesty, I was very depressed this morning. I have been dealing with a lot of spiritual warfare for a very long time. The Lord reminded me of His truth through this beautiful song, though. As a college student, I hear Christians wondering all the time whether they’re wasting time with school. This song is a reminder that more than one kind of work is good.

I teach high school students in a career and vocational exploration program. The work of Porter's Gate weaves work and worship together in powerful ways that allow the Word made flesh to speak to young people about Christ's footsteps in their everyday lives. I thank God for this project often.
