If your garlic will endure cold temperatures, I think planting deeper is better. I'm in 8a and I plant them with the bottom of the hole about 4 inches deep and 4 or more inches apart to give the bulbs room to grow, They do NOT like to be crowded or compete with other plants.. I also soak the garlic cloves in compost tea for several hours to overnight or sometimes two nights before I plant. They grow when they are ready. [The Hopi Indians can't water their plants so they plant them deeply where there is more moisture and farther apart] I've had pretty much complete success doing it this way planting anywhere from 75 to 120 cloves over that past two winter seasons. I don't fuss over them and only water occasionally with compost tea. This season will be my third. I planted early this year in October. In the past I've planted at the end of November. Buying your garlic at the grocery store will mean you won't know until spring whether you have hardneck garlic which produces delicious curly scapes (a few weeks before the bulbs are ready to harvest) or not. The softneck kinds don't grow scapes but they will keep longer in proper storage. "Keene Garlic" is an excellent resource for everything you need to know about Garlic.

You can use the good leaves too, similar to spring onions

Just seeing this almost a year to the date you planted them. Did you keep the bags away from the rain, cause California gets rain from about late Nov to Feb or March. Im thinking of planting them outside but not sure how the rainy season will affect them. Would love to hear your take

Do you put your garlic in the cold for a few months before planting?

I think YouTube reads minds because I just planted garlic in the same type of container earlier this week and then this video pops up in my feed. I saw a bunch of different bulbs for planting on clearance from the local Sprouts grocery store and couldn't pass them up. I'm wondering if spring planting in coastal SoCal will be fruitless once the summer heat sets in. I guess time will tell.

New Subscriber 🙋🏽‍♀️Is it true garlic can be grown in an apartment? We have cold winter weather here on the east coast. And what type of tea do you suggest? Thank you for your video. I can’t wait to plant

The question is, is it worth it?
1. Barrel cost $30
2. Soil cost $20
3. Watering
4. Time
All for 20 bulbs of garlic.
How can we make home gardening more affordable?

If I have to buy a pot, fertilizer,   straw, and a garlic bulb, why not just buy garlic year-round?
