There is a memoir by Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager that talks a bit about these attempts. It all needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as memoirs from the period tend to (his opinions on his role as a cavalry officer on the eastern front were interesting, to say the least, and a lot of it reads like him trying to justify his actively fighting in the war as a Wehrmacht officer), but he describes both these attempts, as well as some of the early plans. For example, Plan A was to simply shoot him during a visit to the front. Turns out the man wore an armored vest and kept a steel plate in his hat, so the shot would have needed to be dead on. Plus they needed to take out ALL of his top party officials, to make sure the mantle of leadership didn't go to the likes of Himmler.

He was light on the details of the July 20th plot, funnily enough. That was after the point when his involvement became minimal, which is how he was able to avoid the firing squad.

From the details, I take it that von Gersdorff's plot is the one dramatized in the recent movie "Bonhoeffer, " although there's reason to think Dietrich Bonhoeffer was involved with all of the 1943 plots to some degree. Presumably they picked that one to sort of stand in for the whole sequence of attempts, on the basis of it having been the most, well, dramatic.

Hitler really was the luckiest MF ever, wasn't he.

I can't help but wonder what would have changed had Adolf been removed prior to Stalingrad. Let's say, by a similarly wounded Heer soldier akin to Stauffenburg after the failure to take Moskau. The power struggle would have been intense!

For a moment I thought this is a cartoon plot

I have just finished reading Traitor Patriots. Canaris, Dohnanyi, and Bonhoeffer have been my heroes in the War in the West for years and I have read much about them over the years, including biographies of Canaris and Bonhoeffer as well as other narratives on the resistance. Traitor Patriots may be the most broad and insightfully inspiring work I have read on the subject. Congratulations on a very well written book!

Wonder if the Russian army is working this hard?

Why did the wehrmacht tried to kill him? Was some sorts of unsatisfaction with the german offensives?

I wonder what would happen happened if they succeeded in 1943. Hard to say what would have happened, but I have to think Germany could have worked something out better than what actually happened. Maybe more like Japan?

Very interesting and critical events. If they had succeeded, would Germany have retained the large territories it controlled then? Who knows? All in all, a subject fit for many books, not just one !

I do not believe that someone would christen their kid after a kubrick movie. Judging that you are roughly that age. So I think you call yourself that, Steve.
