I once had to rotoscope a character into a shot and what Nick taught in a couple of minutes took me hours.

One crucial point here is that insertion will look realistic only if the lighting matches. Let's say the main character has its head shining due to light and yours is not, no matter what you do, it won't look like it belongs there.

Shadow trick is also really cool ! I used the same thing too !
