*My students are learning the right skills? Are you? (No, You aren't) TRUST ME. YOU'RE CLUELESS.*

SUMMER SALE. Use the code JULY at checkout to get 3 months for $40. That's $14...ish a month. Affordable and real-world.

Stay clear of roles that aren't going to help you. If you want to be a data analyst then I have you covered.

I’m an executive recruiter and most of the BFSI market has a strong preference for the domain knowledge. It’s not because the strong data person can’t do the job but the employer feels more confident with hiring the person that knows the domain

Love your channel. Outstanding

Thank you for that advice, I was wondering about that question for quite some time. There are many guides who tell you, that Domain Knowledge is essential. But you make much more sense: you can simply ask the experts in their fields for their advice - you can not be an expert in everything.

Thanks for this, I've wondered about this for a while.

logikbot: sold! This is a much more sane and realistic pace being proposed in your program than the bootcamp I was fumbling through. 6 months miniumum of studying to data analyst/ entry level makes total sense for someone coming from an outside field...The bootcamp totally lost me when they spent all of one week total on pandas, on week two (?) They forgot to mention SQL as well before bombing me with inferential statistics. Sure, perhaps one day I will learn how those apply but maybe I should learn to join tables correctly/per task in SQL first?

I second this that I as a freelancer working on ML Projects, I meet the clients or subject matter experts that guide me with need to know information. That's it. Rest is problem solving skills, data collection, ETL pipelines and modeling.

Domain knowledge is useless. Tech skills are most important, however the communication skills are also valuable. I mean if you are a great technician, who is an arrogant dick or lazy & picky (you would be surprised how many I met) you will be valued less than an open minded engaged person who can not only develop but also communicate or help your colleagues and present your results to the business.

Wow and all the YouTubers and LinkedIn influencers have been saying domain knowledge is more important than tech skills!

That is fascinating and quite surprising to me. I don't doubt that it's true.

If someone is going to get a job working primarily with Power BI, how good do they have to know DAX ?

Hi Mike, what do you think about the recent semi tech new roles like data product manager or data product owner, technical product manager etc.. Some companies see the data as a product and are hiring more PM/PO roles with blended knowledge in sql, coding and product management.. whats your take? Thanks, as always a nice and crisp video!!

Oh! it's too late to launch another missile against another popular myth. I heard this myth from everyone giving advice on learning ML. Thank you Mike.

Domain knowledge could give you an edge for recruitment in smaller/mid sized companies. Also in a situation where 2 candidates ace all the interviews, 1 has domain knowledge, the other doesn't, the domain knowledge candidate will have an advantage.
Having said that domain knowledge is overrated. While it could give you an edge, core skills and experience are much much more important

Thank you for keeping it real, after 5 yrs in Data science it’s time for me to say goodbye and move to a developer role. Most if not all data roles are doing a bunch of nothing over nothing. I can’t defend any of it

Hi Mike. I have a goal to open my own data analytics consultancy in 5 years. Besides SQL and gaining real world experience in data analytics, which other areas should I focus on in order to start a successful data analytics consultancy?
