Grew Sarpo Mira and Sarpo blue danube last year from seed saved from previous year. They both did ok. I save my potatoes in dry paper or hessian sacks in as cold, dark, dry and stable a place as possible but need some air movement. I check regularly to remove any sprouts. I save the best egg sized potatoes for chitting. I'm in North West Wales so blight resistance is key :-)

We are a family of 3 and we grew 12 rows of spuds last year on our plot which was really great had loads off them had whites / red's/ salad potatoes we ended up giving some of our seed potatoes away as brought to many which we got from aldi which turned out really good 👍

I just brought two packs of first earlies...Rocket. Hoping for good results. Never tried them before 👍
That's a good camera you got going on there, hope you start on some fading in and out, editing and titles soon 😏😎

I kid you not we have given up on Mayen Gold potatoes. Same thing that happened to yours. This was 2-3 years ago. They just do not store well or even last in the ground, They are in our experiance a high maintenance potato. We only want potatoes that fend for them selves here. Ones you can put in the ground and forget about. We really like the nearly all the potatoes that have come out of the Sarpo yard. He bred some good ones. Wwe have some first crosses this year between Sarpo Mira and Dakota Red so excited to see what happens this year.

Thats a good selection there Erica! You should get a lbs of spuds there. I am still working on the TPS Vid so bare with me. I counted 450 seeds off the spoon and silly cat knocked them on to the floor was nearly half way through counting. Also can I just say when storing potatoes you need to cure them first and store them in Sand that is slightly moist but not fully moist. If you buy a cheap fridge just for you potatoes. but only leave it running every other day. Ours is on a timer so its only on 10 hours a day. You ony want the fridge set on number 1 or 2 at the most depending on fridge so about 3c - 6c range has been the best for neary all ours. You dont need one with a freeer part as its only the fridge part you need.

Potato planting day is traditionally on Good Friday, April 2nd this year, so it may be a bit early for chitting. I'm leaving mine until Feb. DT Brown don't post out their seed spuds until the end of January, most other seed suppliers are roughly the same.

Love the fact you show us the good bad and downright ugly!. I have done this more than once before and found mouldy potatoes. I rarely use seed potatoes but just supermarket ones and not been disappointed. I'll be joining your challenge!

My faves are Charlotte. Were growing Charlotte as always but are trying Casablanca and Anja this year too as they're coming in a set from our allotment shop. It will be interesting to try different varieties this year. We also have 1.5 kg of mystery potatoes for our growing challenge.

I am still awaiting Wilkos to get them in, I tried before lockdown as we could all see it coming.

I am hoping they have them in this weekend or next (they are 10min walk away) so I will just combine it in with daily exercise.

Hi Erica. I followed your original video on how to keep seed potatoes in the fridge and to be honest, I had to throw quite a lot away. They were mouldy. It's such a shame as I was really looking forward to seeing positive results from this method. I don't know what went wrong as the potatoes were dry before I put them inside cardboard egg boxes. Nevermind. We live and learn. Thank you for being honest about what happened to yours. Take care. Jan :-)

Great vid Erica. But I'm confused. What's the difference between a sprout and a chit?

Oh yikes that sucks but onward and upward good thing you have loads of other options. I always buy organic red potatoes and they chit themselves 😂😂 so I Normally don’t panic about buying seed potatoes(plus here where I live things like seed potatoes and onion sets don’t come out til Marchish). As always stay safe and stay gardening 🇨🇦🧑‍🌾🌶✌️🥬 ps until I started watching UK YouTube I didn’t even realize there were so many types 😂😂

I‘m reconciled to having to order online this year - I just decided I‘d use it to experiment with varieties that are new to me:

La Ratte
Red Duke of York
Golden Wonder
Foxton
Edzell Blue
Congo
Catriona

Have you heard of any of those?

I think you have plenty of seed potatoes, especially if you feed and water them well. We normally only plant 3 kgs of seed potatoes and almost always have more than enough to last us. To be fair, we try not to have potatoes with every meal. We generally prefer Squash as we find we are more imaginative when cooking them so the food is less bland and repetitive.

Hi Erica, Always enjoy your vids. Thank you. Question: Do you think it is too cold in the polytunnel to chit potatoes in there or would you recommend keeping them in the house on a windowsill?
