Good-looking, great to drive and also sometimes annoying, the Mazda CX-5 is nevertheless among the standouts in the compact SUV segment. It faces a lot of competitors and some of them are very good, but it more than holds its own there.

That said, it’s eventually heading for the chopping block as Mazda gradually rolls out a new series of SUVs that ride on all-new platforms. That includes the CX-50 that will eventually take over the slot, but the CX-5 is alive and well for 2023. It’s also mostly unchanged from last year’s model, other than fuel-saving cylinder deactivation now added to the base GX trim, so it’s now standard on all non-turbo models.

Have you driven or cross-shopped the Mazda CX-5? Let us know what you thought of it in the comments below!

I have a 2021 and I like the knobs instead of a touch screen. It is much easier to use while driving.

The CX5 is what keeps Mazda a float, it is their #1 selling car… they won’t stop this model. the CX50 is for a whole different demographic.

First review pointing out the knob issue for short people!

People keep talking about CX 50 replacing the CX 5. That will never happen. CX-5 is built for the world CX-50 is for North America. CX-5 is Mazda's bread and butter.

Picked up my 2023 CX-5 Preferred today. Nice driving vehicle.

The fob is fine. You don’t need to press a button to unlock your car anyway! With the buttons on the side, you will be less inclined to accidentally hit the unlock/panic button while in your pocket.

I’m short as well and the knob is perfect. It falls right at your hand. I will agree though typing letters and numbers is suboptimal versus the touchscreen but that’s the only thing in my opinion at the touchscreen would be better for especially when the vehicle is in motion. The key is not my favorite Toyota keys are much easier to use when I first got it. I thought it felt a little cheap but I threw it in the case in soon forgot otherwise there’s really no purpose to use it.

I'm waiting on my CX-5 GX, will admit the key fob is a weird pain, why with all that area they have the buttons on the side? Also, being vertically challenged myself, the rotary dial may prove to be a bit of a hassle.

CX5 isn't going anywhere for sure. However, I won't be surprised if they pull the plug on CX50 and make an outdoorsy model of CX5.

I wish the turbo was a stand alone option for $2200 in the USA

This CX5 is a great bargain beside the RAV4. Mazda always were great at driving dynamics, the pedigree comes from the MX5.

Any other brand are absolutely not worth the money especially many of the brands like Honda comes with disastrous Turbo engines.

Good Job! Other reviewers could take lessons from you.

I’ve watched several reviews on CX5, this is the 1st to point out the poor design on the knob and no touch screen. Thank you great points

No wireless Apple CarPlay. Yet there is a wireless charging pad which is realistically useless because you have to plug in for Apple CarPlay. Not nice to have dangling cords in your car in 2022. My Mazda app needs improvements. When you remote start your car, the car shuts off when you open the door. Should sense the the FOB and continue to run.

I agree the fob is pure junk. Its buttons are easily pressed, and if you put it in your pocket the wrong way, you'll find the vehicle unlocked or the rear tailgate wide open. We have a 2020 CX-5 GT, looking to move to the 2023 CX-5 GT or Sport, was hoping that FOB style was gone in 2023.

This model has been around for a few years now. Any news about the successor?
