Rim vs Disc Brakes

Rim brakes versus disc brakes - which one is best?! Both are awesome and get the job done, but for trials riding, it's tough to beat rim brakes with ground rims. The flex in the spokes makes just enough of a difference when it comes to precision - and if you were really stacking them up against each other, you would also consider the danger of bending rotors when riding super technical terrain on your trials bikes. The newer bikes actually come with a built-in guard over the rear brake rotor!

I’ve been wondering why trials riders use rim brakes now it’s answered thanks!

this is a great explanation of the two ! "scuffing" your rims is a trick few people know of. it eats up pads but a new pad is 2 dollars and replaced in 1 minute.

I run V-brakes with a 7005 aluminum booster and 90a polyurethane pads, I used to run a cross hatch style grind but i switched to a straight grind done exactly as per the Ali Clarkson tutorial video, made a massive difference, they are now the most powerful brakes I've ridden, no more arm pump (now i just gas out from lack of fitness haha). Thanks for the content man, love your channel!

I also used to be a trials rider. I even was third place in the German cup (I have no idea how it’s called) I recently sold my trial bike and I’m kinda missing it even though I didn’t have fun riding anymore. Now I’m trying to become a professional enduro rider

I use rim brakes cus it's what the bike had when I bought it with my first paycheck and am currently somewhat broke :D

I've noticed this as well but most slop is due to disc brake pads moving since they're not an exact fit. Never noticeable when riding normally but noticeable when doing trials or trackstands.

I love this kind of technical information, even though I have not* ridden for a time. Good stuff!

True, it all depends what discipline you do. Not all bike needs too much brake power.

I’ve been riding trials recently and just never questioned the use of rim brakes, thanks for the explanation and sick riding

Not the first time I heard that, it makes sense .

It also makes sense to use rim brakes in this setting because you're using the brakes to stop the wheel entirely and not necessarily to slow down. The disc has advantage over rim with regard to wear and tear as rim brakes on regular aluminium rims will eat the rim structure and lead to failure.

I’ve always wanted to know this about trials riders. Thanks.

You also get much better leverage using rim brakes. Think rotor diameter vs rim diameter. Huge difference!
