Poor Ophelia....to be immortalized in the greatest work of literature is small consolation

Those names sounded so familiar that I had to look them up. Worked on genealogy all day to find the link ups but found them. Edward is my 1st cousin 14 times removed. We can't pick our relatives, but it does make genealogy more interesting. Thank you Claire, you make history and genealogy so much fun. Hugs!

🇭🇲🦘 (viewed 4/12/2020) It was a 'delight' to hear about Anne Cecil - and despite the dreadful treatment (towards her) by her husband she stood by

... him, even having more children. Then to die so young. What a 'great lady' she does appear to have been! Indeed a "good woman"!

"Thank you" Claire 💓👑👍

Anne’s father William Cecil (the long-recognized model for Polonius) was the puppetmaster who married her to an unwilling de Vere—who was raised in Cecil House and saw her as his little sister. But Cecil wanted his title and received it with the marriage of his daughter to an Earl. While abroad, de Vere was fed lies about her by his servant Yorke (pronounced “Iago” perhaps?), and avoided her for years. After realizing his error spent his last decades grieving her as Ophelia, Desdemona, Hermione...But it was the Cecils who controlled the historical record.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that “only three men received dedications of Shakespeare works and each man was engaged to one of the Earl of Oxford’s three daughters.“

She kept her dignity through some very trying times, therefore gained much respect. Though not an easy task, perhaps she was an example to follow.

So very interesting. She must have been very confident and self aware. I agree, she handled the scandal well and rose above the pain and betrayal.

So many good women were not treated well by their husbands. Anne seemed to have kept her eye on her virtue and produced children who carried on the family name. I admire women such as her who were faithful wives to their husbands and also to their religion. Did see a cameo of Teasel. Great talk of a little known person from an interesting period in English history.

I feel sorry for Cecil. Can’t help but wonder how she would have gone had her father married her to Philip Sydney instead.

Pity De Vere made her subject of scandal. That must have been horrible to deal with in Tudor times.

Thank you for these daily videos! And I’ll be tuning in tomorrow!

Nice to hear about the family of one of Queen Elizabeth's favorites. I would have wished a better life on Anne, though she made the best of her situation and had an excellent support network around her to counter her husband's accusations.
