As Countries Ban Food Exports, Is A Global Food Crisis Unfolding? | CNA Correspondent

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was already disrupting the global food supply chain. Now months of unexpected weather are squeezing harvests even further. As food-producing economies start to safeguard what they have for their own consumption, countries that rely on food imports are facing potential shortages. In this climate of rising food inflation and insecurity, should governments be putting their domestic interests first, or - as international criticism implies - be keeping trade free so the rest of the world is fed as well?

CNA Correspondent looks at three major exporting countries providing the world with two staples and a luxury food, what their supply limitations mean for the rest of us, and if technology can counter the shortfall.

8:57 India's sugar export ban

The real culpret is not the climate, but politicians.

How would it be a summer of shortages, given the causes (food processing plants being burnt to the ground on a weekly basis, countries withholding exports, farmers not farming, truckers not trucking, etc)? More like a deep mire that we will not get out of for YEARS.

Very pleased with India's decision to ban exports. Providing for your people & ensuring their welfare is EXACTLY what a government is supposed to do. Unfortunately this lesson isn't understood by many other governments.

Agreeing with India decision to protect their people first. It doesn't make sense to starve your own family to feed others.

Worrying it may sound of this food crisis but when this situation get severe should teach people to not take every single thing including food for granted. Many do not understand what and how tough labour people had to go through from planting/fishing/raising before it reached the the market, kitchen and table. All the hardships of those hands just for the food be readily available in the market are forgotten. Everyone thinks that because they paid for it they have the freedom to waste it.

Each country is morally responsible to their own people first, then if they can help others they may do so.

This is why it's very important for other countries not to depend on other countries for food you must find ways to grow your own food find your own ways to feed your own people do not depend on other countries or this will happen to you.. this is why as an individual independent self-sufficient person self-sufficiency is the way to go..

It would be helpful if everybody pitches in, if able, to cut down on the shortage by lowering the demands, even by a tiny amount. One way would be reducing waste food and over consumption, another would be planting some crops in their backyards.

If the west can sanction Russia without other country's permission, India can also ban wheat export.

With a country supplying grains as India has why are their so many in poverty level? Because the other countries have been ripping them off! Now they are angry because India needs to care for their people first? India has it right! Have you own house in order!

Definitely there’s going to be a shortage for countries that are ravaged by corrupt governments and places that have been hit hard by floods, drought and wars. Wealthier countries will do better but poorer countries I fear will have difficulties. It’s a difficult time we live in.

I do believe there's going to be food shortages and everything but that there is a lot of exaggeration going on and people are panicking unwarranted..

Its a big concern for any country without enough food production.

I agree with India's urgent decision. They have to secure the food supply for their own people first, if the farmers complain about the surplus of their production then the government can buy or deal with it later. But if they take risks and export without thinking, the starving come surprisingly and they will mess up

No matter the food situation, humans are going to breed like rabbits. Seems like we cannot connect the dots when it comes to population and resource depletion.
