I love how the second someone throws a screwball again, it's absolutely breaking people's brains.

The reason his pitch is so effective is because when the ear piece in the batters ear says “he’s throwing a slider” they all think it’s gonna go glove side 😂

In college, we would call this a back up slider. It was essentially a mistake. Often times it would leak into the barrel path of a right handed batter and get nuked.

In Japan they have a pitch called the shuuto, its a slider that breaks arm side. I would say that's probably what this is, but nobody else state-side uses it.

It’s called a shuuto pitch, a lot of Japanese pitchers use it. Yoshinobu Yamamoto use it a lot.

I've done a bit of studying on this, I think it's just a screwball with lower drop, or a slider that just falls out of his hands.

Based off of movement, it's very similar to a sinker. Obviously it's not as fast as normal sinkers.

The age-old "what should we call this pitch?".

Calling a pitch by the way it is gripped and thrown is the traditional way, you now know how the pitcher throws the ball and we all know the same pitch can move differently.

Calling a pitch by it's movement has the advantage of knowing how the pitch moves without having to watch the actual pitch. But how to you differenciate between for example change-up and sinker? Some throw change-ups that have the exact same velo and movement as other pitcher's sinkers. We will have to come up with new terminology if that's the way we want to call pitches.

thank derek johnson of the reds pitching staff for developing this pitch. one of the best at developing pitchers in the game (chapman, greene, cueto, chad innings eater mike leake, helped revive trevor bauer, revive wade miley, and creating the monster of jose de leon)

The movie Major League names this the “Shooto” where the ball moves arm side

I didn’t expect Bailey to be in the shorts looping game, but it’s mint. As is everything. I love you.

Screw ball. I think it's actually a screwball. It reminds me of some of the old pitches from the 30s, 40.

After World War 2 Finding pictures that could do it reliably was nearly impossible. If he could make it wobble around its own Axis, producing a cork screw pattern, it would be complete.

All from a right hander, think clock. Curve 12-6, slider 2-8, screw 10-4. All of these can have slightly different angles but you get the picture. A splitter and fork are the same pitch and used as a change-up, they break down and usually slightly away. A circle change will tail in. All 3 arm angles are the same and thrown as hard as a fastball. Your grip is what what slows them. 4 seam is a luttle faster than a 2 seam but the 2 seam fasball has more movement. 2 seam is used most of the time but if you've thrown several off speed pitches to a hitter and he's fouled them off, you'll mix in a high 4 seam to see if you can get a swing and a miss.

Just looks like something else Devin Williams would throw honestly

If your slider drops it’s a sinker. Slide refers to horizontal movement

I like to think it goes that way because he's missing some really basic information about throwing a slider, and nobody told him because they figured he must already know it.

A reverse slider! Like a screwball but a slider.
