Turning a Eurorack Modular Mess into Usable Music.

I came up against a classic Eurorack Modular Synth issue whist patching my Tip Top Buchla Oscillator with the ALM Squid Salmple. The Patch was cool but it wasnt something I could actually use to make the kind of music I want to be making.

Nice, very Jon Hopkins - Neon Pattern Drum -esque technique.

Edit: To clarify, Jon Hopkins put the entire track through amplitude modulation, turning the pads into a beat

Some very usable ideas here. Not the first time I’ve watched one of your videos and thought that, so- subbed.

I've found that triggering LFOs at quick, semi-regular intervals on Math's 1 and 4 while feeding that into an attenuater (WMD 4tten) and back into the channel 1 and 4 (or vice versa), can produce really glitchy, syncopated patterns. I don't know what is going on with the relationship b/w the "trigger" input on Maths being patched at the same time that an lfo is being patched into the 1 and 4 inputs (after being attenuated), but it's my new favorite semi/random source of modulation.

Hey bud, just wanted to thank you for your videos! It's great to see someone with a similar musical philosophy take the time to share these wonderful tips and tricks that are more music-facing than just purely tech chat. Keep up the good work!

Salmon

Salmple

There’s a silent letter in those two words. Hint: it’s the same letter in both of them.

Modular is fun to experiment with as the sonic possibilities are endless but. primary aspect of Modular Music( imho) is that it rarely ever provides much space for the listener... from ambient evolving soundscapes to intricate syncopated notes beats and sounds its often just non-stop.
I lose interest if the same groove/patterns ..are continues w/o something else happening.

Occasionally I find modular posts that use tricks like 'drop-outs' ( .. stopping the groove and letting the reverb /echo ring out before restarting), or arrangements variations and/or a change in rhythm and harmonic movement and these catch my interest.

great channel, glad i found it! videos are typically under 10 minutes and great ratio of (great) music to exposition. my question... how long, start to finish, does it take for you to create the patch and get something usable in ableton? (disregarding the video production) a problem i am trying to fix is that i make a cool patch, get lost in it for a couple hours (fun but UGH) then think it is boring/rubbish and don't record it. i need to work on recognizing that moment of when it's good enough to record before i get tired of listening to it.
